Nail Technician Course Outline

Unit 1: Anatomy of the Skin and Nails

The anatomy of the skin and nails will be covered in this unit. It will go through the skin layers, what they are and how they work, the arrangement of the nails, and nail development. It would then discuss certain typical nail and skin disorders that affect the hands and feet.

Layers of the Skin

  • Epidermis
  • Dermis
  • Hypodermis

Nail Structure

  • Nail bed - the soft tissue under the nail plate.
  • Perionychium - the skin that clings to the edges of the nail plate.
  • Solehorn cuticle - a layer of dead tissue that provides protection in between the nail plate and the hyponychium.
  • Proximal fold of the eponychium - a thin band of living skin found in between cuticle and the eponychium It preserves and wraps the matrix.
  • Cuticle - a sheet of dead tissue at the nail plate's foundation It prevents the matrix from being infected.

Nail Conditions

It is critical to understand certain nail and skin conditions and certain therapies may not be appropriate for those with such conditions. Always ask the customer if they have any complications with their hands, feet, or nails during the appointment. This is for their welfare and the protection of the company – unwittingly causing them injury could result in legal problems.

Fungal infection

Discoloration and thickening of the nail plate are symptoms of a fungal nail infection. Excess moisture and warmth are two common factors.

Discoloration

It is a usual symptom of both fungal and bacterial infections.

Brittle nails

Brittle nails are described as nails that are thin, peeling, or splitting. Dry brittle and soft brittle are the two varieties.

Skin Conditions Affecting Hands and Feet

Clients with skin disorders that affect their hands and feet can have medical services limited.

  • Paronychia
  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis

Unit 2: Massage, Manicure and Pedicure

A massage increases the relaxation of the client's experience. It increases their sense of being pampered and boosts their general well-being. Massage has a range of scientific evidence supporting its benefits.

Contraindications

Hand Massage Techniques

  • Effleurage
  • Petrissage
  • Friction
  • Pressure point

Manicure Process, Products and Aftercare

Manicures are more than simply making the clients' nails look beautiful. They help to preserve good nail plates, cuticles, and scalp.

Pedicure Process, Products and Aftercare

Procedures in the pedicure procedure are identical to those in manicures, but there are a few extras.

Unit 3: Basic Nail Techniques and Equipment

This unit will discuss the various techniques and essential equipment that an aspiring nail technician will need.

Equipment

  • Nail file
  • Nail scissors/clippers
  • Orangewood sticks

 Products

  • Non-acetone nail polish remover
  • Liquid cuticle remover
  • Cuticle oil

Nail Drills

A nail drill is a kind of electronic nail file that can also be used for shaping. Some versions have a range of drill bits as well as customizable speed settings.

Techniques

  • Filing
  • Cutting and Shaping
  • Buffing
  • When a client does not want to add polish, buffing gives their nails a clean and polished look. Furthermore, it also increases the polish's grip on the nails.
  • Polishing
  • Cuticle Pushing
  • Removing Calluses

Unit 4: Gel Nails

Gel nails are made of a liquid gel solution that hardens semi-solid monomers when exposed to UV radiation. Another alternative is to use gel extensions. The nails are given extended tips, and the gel is added in the same manner as before.

Application

Choose a gel which does not contain any one of the following ingredients: formaldehyde, toluene, or dibutyl phthalate (DBP). With long-term use, these additives induce inflammation and other, more serious side effects.

Infill

If the client's nails begin to grow after the manicure, there may be a space at the cuticle that is not filled with gel. If the customer is not happy to have the gel withdrawn, the method of filling in this region is known as infill.

Removal

Clients should not try to remove gel nails at home because they could cause harm.

Unit 5: Shellac Nails

Jan Arnold of Creative Nail Design invented Shellac, a proprietary system. Shellac nails yield a similar effect to gel nails – a long-lasting, shiny polish that lasts around 14 days. The distinction is in the formula: gel is a liquid gel formula, while shellac is a mixture of gel polish and normal nail polish. Shellac also needs UV light to cure. Shellac polish is easily removed due to the chemical reaction that happens as it cures. When acetone is applied to the paint, it flakes into little fragments and quickly peels off.

  • Application
  • Infill
  • Removal

Unit 6: Acrylic Nails

Acrylic nails are more stable than gel nails. The acrylic solution blends liquid and powder to produce a paste that adheres to the nail pad. The color comes from the powder.

Application

  • Method 1: Applying Acrylic to Natural Nails
  • Method 2: Applying Acrylic Using Nail Forms
  • Method 3: Applying Acrylic to Tips

Unit 7: Nail Art Part 1

French Tips - are commonly added on naturally shaped nails.

Jelly Nails - are influenced by the iconic jelly sandals of the 1990s. Jelly nails, like sandals, are polished and transparent, with texture. Gel color is a common choice for making jelly nails.

Stencils - nail stencils are a simple way to produce precise nail art if the nail technician is not experienced at painting freehand.

Airbrush - instead of applying by hand, the nail technician uses an airbrush gun to apply acrylic-based polish to the nails. They can either paint freehand or with stencils. For beginners who wish to learn the technique, using an airbrush in combination with stencils is perfect.

Unit 8: Nail Art Part 2

Ombre - have a color gradient – two or more shades that merge into one another. The variation may be vertical, horizontal, or diagonal.

Holographic and Chrome - gel and powder, also known as effect powders, are used to produce holographic and chrome nails. Depending on the powder's composition, various effects are produced.

Gold Foil - this technique is used to embellish the nail after it has been polished. Gold foil is very thin and comes in shapes or tiny sheets that can be molded. It comes in a variety of shades, including gold.

Unit 9: Health, Safety and Hygiene

Sanitization Protocols - sanitation and cleaning protocols which are followed correctly guard against biological hazards. Cleaning is another word for sanitizing, which is the removal of any visible traces of soil and debris. Disinfecting means eliminating potentially dangerous pathogens from a previously cleaned component.

OSHA - an acronym that stands for Occupational Safety and Health Management. It is important for any aspiring nail technician to consider OSHA requirements and how they refer to them.

  • Chemical Hazards and Control Methods
  • Ergonomic Hazards and Control Methods
  • COSHH

Licenses - based on where an individual lives, a license to work as a nail technician may be required. In certain cases, they must pass an exam; in others, they must actually complete preparation.

Unit 10: Client Consultation and Business Expansion

Customer Service - when a client considers whether to stick to their salon or go home, providing outstanding customer service makes all the difference. The client deserves to know that they are concerned with their needs and are there to assist them, not just to collect their money.

The Consultation Process

  • Client Records
  • Time Management
  • Managing Expectations

Marketing and Growing Your Business

  • Massage
  • High-Quality Photographs
  • Word of Mouth
  • Record-Keeping Systems
