Nail Technician Professional Acrylic Online Course Outline

Module 1: Acrylic Nail Enhancements

The first module in this online nails class is an introduction to artificial nail enhancement through the use of acrylic nails. Acrylic is made up of two parts: powder (polymer) and liquid (acrylic) (monomer). To be formed by filing and molding, this combination must be carefully prepared and uniform. As a result, acrylic nails are durable and long-lasting when used in buildings. Acrylics can be used for a variety of reasons.

Materials

Acrylic plastic is used to make synthetic nail extensions. Acrylic is a type of plastic that is made from a chemical called methacrylate. Chemicals are used to make artificial nail improvements. A monomer liquid reacts with a polymer powder to create the acrylic in the nail extension. As they react with the chemical components found in the environment, monomers alter shape and form.

History of Acrylic Nails

Revlon invented nail enamel in 1932, which is a long-lasting and adaptable manicure product. Maxwell Lappe came up with the notion to aid those who had a habit of chewing their nails in 1934. The dentist created acrylics to deter persons who practiced this behavior. Acrylics have evolved as a result of advances in chemical processing and materials research.

Pros of Acrylic Nails

  • Acrylic is easy to work with to create desired shapes and lengths. They can include other colorful and artistic features for the ultimate glamorous look. The artificial nail design can thus be changed as needed over time.

  • When it is time to take off the acrylic nails or change to a new design, they can be removed by dissolving them in readily available chemical removers. If the initial application is professionally made, the natural nails remain unaffected.

  • With advances in the monomer and polymer products, achieving the right mix brings out the desired texture as the resin can set evenly, giving a clean and well-polished look

Cons of Acrylic Nails

  • Improper application or use of the ingredients can cause damage to the natural nails and the root. Infections by fungi have been known to occur under such circumstances.

  • The monomer and polymer mixtures yield a limited number of designs on their own: about 10–12.

Module 2: Role of a Nail Technician

A nail technician is a beauty expert who focuses on the look of fingernails and toenails. They work in nail salons, spas, and cosmetology centers. Some technicians, on the other hand, like to work on the go.

Licensing Requirements

There are steps you must follow in order to achieve your goal of being a well-equipped nail technician. Although a bachelor's degree is not required, certification is highly encouraged if you want to excel in the nail industry. Enrolling in a nail technician course is an excellent first step toward becoming a renowned nail technician.

Professional Appearance

Your appearance is the determining factor of your client's faith in your expertise in the nail technician field. Your client will have entire confidence in your talents if you arrive dressed professionally and with visible effort.

Welcoming Demeanor

Because this line of employment requires face-to-face connection, how one portrays themselves is crucial. Both verbal and nonverbal communication are included. Clients will feel more at ease if you greet them with a pleasant smile and speak confidently and tactfully during the consultation. Being friendly and maintaining a cheerful attitude and engaging in stimulating discussion will help you succeed.

Recommending Products

It is critical to have sufficient knowledge in all areas of your competence as a nail technician. Clients frequently inquire about a variety of topics, including, but not limited to, nail form preferences, nail polish color preferences, enhancement options, and hand cream preferences.

Module 3: Anatomy

Bones

  • Phalanges

  • Metacarpals

  • Carpals

Joints

The palmar/volar surface (on the palm), dorsal (on the back of the hand), radial (on the side of the thumb), and ulnar (on the side of the thumb) joints are the four types of joints found on the hand (the little finger end).

Muscle Groups

  • Interossei muscles are grouped into a) dorsal interossei (back of the hand), of which there are four, and these are used to splay our fingers and b) palmar interossei (palm side of the hand), of which there are three, allowing us to bring the fingers together. All interossei muscles are active in the movement of MCP joints.

  • The hypothenar muscle group consists of the abductor digiti minimi, the flexor digiti minimi, and the opponent digiti minimi. The small finger uses them in different functions.

Blood Supply

  • The radial artery (deep palmar arch)

  • The ulnar artery (superficial palmar arch)

  • Common digital arteries

Nail Anatomy

  • Nail plate

  • Nail bed

  • Hyponychium

  • Onychodermal band

  • The matrix

Natural Nail Development

The process of vertebrate epithelial cells becoming filled with keratin protein filaments, which grow up, die, and accumulate to form rigid, resistant nails, is known as keratinization.

Module 4: Nail Conditions

Nail Conditions

It is crucial to be aware of the most frequent nail and skin issues. Some treatments may not be appropriate for people who suffer from specific illnesses. Always inquire about any concerns with the client's hands, feet, or nails throughout the consultation. This is for their safety and your company's protection; mistakenly harming them could result in legal troubles.

Common Nail Issue

  • Fungal infection

  • Discoloration

  • Brittle nails

  • Splitting nails

  • Thickened nails

  • Ingrown toenails

Skin Conditions Affecting Hands and Feet

  • Paronychia

  • Eczema

  • Psoriasis

Module 5: Nail Preparation

Preparing Equipment

Always be ready for your clients by having all necessary equipment, tools, accessories, and supplies. Depending on your location and client needs, what you acquire or have available for utilization will differ. In any case, being over prepared is preferable to being underprepared. Client needs will alter daily and even from visit to visit.

Acrylic Nail Equipment

  • Cuticle pusher

  • Nail files

  • Nail buffing block

  • Dappen dish

  • Nail brush

Nail Techniques

Once all of the equipment, tools, and supplies are in place, the next step is to prepare the nails so that the acrylic application procedure goes smoothly and safely for the customer. To provide a good customer experience, preparation should be well-planned. Prepare everything needed next to the work table and ensure the customer is seated comfortably with their hands on the work table.

Preparing Nails

The client would appreciate a light massage of the fingers and hands. This is optional and may be determined by the client's needs or your nail salon's service philosophy. Nail preparation is necessary for the client to have faith in the nail technician's knowledge and skill. The client is guaranteed the best results when you are well-versed in your craft.

Hygiene

Begin by cleaning your hands with an antibacterial spray and lint-free paper towels or cotton wool to remove dirt or grime. Check for any locations that were overlooked visually. After that, remove any nail varnish, gel polish, or outdated acrylics, one at a time. Remove any old varnish with an acetone-based remover, then remove gel polish or old acrylic nail extensions with a pure acetone dip.

Preparing Natural Nails

The natural nails are clipped, trimmed, and filed, leaving roughly a 1-2mm tip. Because this is where the acrylics will be trapped, take your time and be thorough. Only healthy natural nails with appropriate strength and stiffness should be employed to adhere to the acrylic extensions. If you notice the client's nails are unsuitable, stop working on them and notify them appropriately.

Buffing

Begin buffing the natural nails with a 180-grit buff, using soft but forceful strokes. This helps the acrylic tips adhere to the natural nails. The natural nails must be nicely polished and free of jagged edges as buffing produces the essential texture for later acrylic application.

Cutting and Shaping

Cut off the surplus tips with acrylic tip cutters, keeping in mind the ultimate length and form that the client requires. Then, as needed, skillfully shape and size the points. Finally, it is time to bring forth the final shape, depending on what was previously agreed upon with the client.

Acrylic Mixture

Due to the chemical reaction, the monomer (liquid) and polymer (powder) combination begin to set as soon as they come into contact. Your movements should be precise and fluid. On a nail practice mat, test the combination and strokes first. When you are working with a client, you will have the confidence to produce a neat and thorough job.

Applying the Acrylic Mixture

It is crucial when applying acrylic that you follow instructions to the tee. Fill a dappen dish with monomer liquid. Dip the right nail brush lightly into the monomer liquid and tap the brush against the dish edge to remove any surplus liquid. Next, dip the brush into the polymer powder to create a uniformly sized blob (bead) that can be put straight to the nail. Begin at the bottom and work your way up, using delicate but consistent strokes.

Final Filing

Check sure the final look is what the client requested to get the most significant result. The final touches can be added by shaping, filing, or buffing as needed. Check the evenness and smoothness of the acrylic nail extension with your fingertips. As needed, smooth off any bumps or irregular lines. Remove any dust or dirt from the acrylics and fingers.

Module 6: Tip Application

Application of Tips

To install artificial nail tips correctly, you must first gather the following supplies. Tip application is a delicate technique that requires a great deal of attention, precision, and elegance. A well-prepared nail technician must perform the procedure, has all of the necessary tools and equipment, and has adequate supplies and technical knowledge.

Selecting the Right Tips

Acrylic or fake nail tips are used to develop a more prolonged, shapelier nail. They also lengthen the natural nail and provide a stable foundation for it. Artificial nails are available in a variety of shapes, widths, thicknesses, colors, and pliability. In addition, c-curves, contact parts, and smile lines are all different.

Tip Preparation

Before the client arrives for their acrylic nail makeover, prepare yourself to satisfy them and exceed their expectations. Preparing the tips you will utilize goes a long way toward providing a positive customer experience. When the client sees that you have anticipated their wants and are prepared to assist them, they will be delighted.

Client Preferences

You take on much responsibility when your client entrusts you with their nail makeover. Consistency, quality, and a good customer experience lead to repeat client business. This is accomplished by paying close attention to the client's preferences and communicating them back to them. This demonstrates that you have grasped their requirements.

Module 7: Acrylic Application

Products

Acrylic nails are created by mixing the acrylic powder with acrylic liquid. The reaction between the two produces a resin, which hardens and forms the visible section of acrylic nails. PMMA, or poly-ethyl methyl methacrylate, is a mixture of the monomers ethyl methacrylate (EMA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) (MMA).

Application Process

Acrylic nail application is a delicate procedure that should be treated with caution and performed only by a qualified nail technician. The liquid monomer and powder polymer have adequately been formulated to act in unison in the right amounts and under specific conditions.

Common Challenges

Runny acrylic is a common issue. This is due to a mismatch between monomer liquid and polymer powder. There is too much liquid and not enough powder in a runny bead. To make a bead that is neither too wet nor too dry, use a ratio of 1.5 parts liquid to 1 part powder. To get the best ratio, follow the manufacturer's guidelines, as they tend to change.

Smooth Appearance

The correct brush and brush handling technique are the first steps toward achieving a smooth appearance. If the angle is off, you will end up with flaws. Mixing the monomer liquid and polymer powder to make a medium-wet bead, press the bead to the nail, spread the bead on the nail, and the final touch before the resin solidifies are all nail brush techniques.

Module 8: Acrylic Repair and Removal

Causes of Common Issues

Acrylic nails can begin to lift, resulting in uneven or rough edges. This indicates that the application's last stage was not completed correctly. Acrylic and natural nails may not be adequately connected, resulting in the acrylics snapping off. This might happen if you use the wrong size nail tips and force them to flatten when applying them. They eventually separate on their own.

Common Maintenance

Acrylic nails can break at the corners, leaving a rough edge that catches. The first step in addressing this typical problem is to file using a 180-grit file gently. The nail technician will eventually have to rebuild the chopped-off corner to align it with the remainder of the acrylic nail. Acrylics need to be rebalanced every two weeks or so, depending on the client's habits.

Scheduling Maintenance

It is recommended that you visit a professional nail technician every two or three weeks for proper care. Longer gaps between maintenance will increase the amount of work required. When the schedules become more disjointed, the acrylics must be rebalanced, which takes additional time and effort.

Infill/Backfill

There will be a noticeable gap between the bottom half of the acrylic and the cuticle line once the acrylics have been applied. The natural nail's continued growth generates the gap. This is the void that must be filled to keep the nails looking new. Because you merely apply new acrylic to space instead of removing the entire nail, infilling saves time and money for clients.

How to Remove

Remind clients that acrylic nails should only be removed by a skilled expert with the proper equipment, supplies, and abilities. Improper removal can cause damage to the natural nails, as well as infection and pain. The superfluous acrylic nails are clipped and filed down as much as possible throughout the acrylics removal process.

Aftercare Recommendations

The nail bed bears the brunt of the impact and effects of regular acrylic nail use. The acrylic application technique might potentially harm the nail bed. The goal of aftercare is to nourish the nail bed with mild hydration to withstand the stresses of daily living. Cuticle oil can be used to cure nails efficiently. It has been carefully massaged into the cuticle line and nail bed.

Module 9: Health, Safety, and Hygiene

Risks

Acrylic nails are related to several dangers. Make sure your clients are aware of the hazards before they undergo any nail treatments.

  • Infection risk increases when the nail plate and artificial nail gap is not disinfected correctly, creating a perfect environment for bacterial infections.

  • Nails that have been battered and broken can be predisposed to fungal infections.

  • The repeated application and removal of artificial nails may open the client to allergic reactions from the chemicals used.

Health and Safety

The supplies and materials used by nail salon technicians pose a chemical threat. Monomer solutions, polymer powders, removers, primers, varnish, dehydrators, and cleansers are just a few examples. These substances are inhaled by both the technician and the client. They can wreak havoc on the skin, nails, eyes, and lungs.

Health Impacts

  • Acid primers can irritate or burn the skin/eyes.

  • Dermatitis has been known to result from the use of liquid monomers and powder polymers.

  • Acrylic mixture fumes can result in headaches, dizziness, nausea, and irritation.

  • Asthma can be agitated by nail dust from filing.

  • Acrylic nail monomers can cause dermatitis and allergic reactions.

Sanitization and Cleaning Protocols

Physical dangers are avoided by following proper sanitization and cleaning procedures (hazards from blood and bodily fluids which could cause infection). Cleaning is another term for sanitizing, which entails eliminating all visible filth and debris. Disinfecting an item that has already been cleansed involves eradicating potentially hazardous microorganisms.

Biological Safety in the Workplace

Working as a nail technician will expose you to compounds that can be dangerous if inhaled or consumed, especially if done over a long period. You can also become infected by coming into contact with fungal illnesses or receiving blood from clients.

First Aid Kit

  • Small flashlight

  • Scissors and tweezers

  • Emergency blanket

  • Triangular bandages

  • Antiseptic towelettes

When You Should Stop Working on a Client

If a client becomes wounded or ill, you should cease treating them right once and analyze the situation.

  • Minor cuts to the fingers: These can be washed with sanitizer or hydrogen peroxide, dressed with antiseptic, and then bandaged.

  • Break in the nail near the cuticle: File off the excess nail, apply antiseptic and apply a bandage if the break is extensive.

Fire Protection

OSHA requires employers to have an emergency response and fire prevention plan that complies with the Code of Federal Regulations.

Module 10: Client Consultation and Business Expansion

Customer Service

When a client decides whether or not to return to your salon, providing exceptional customer service makes all the difference. Your client wants to know that you are concerned about their requirements and assist them rather than just grab their money.

The Consultation Process

We discussed some principles of client consulting earlier in the course. We will expand on that information here.

  • Client Records

  • Time Management

  • Managing Expectations

Where to Conduct Your Business

If you are opening your nail salon, you will encounter various challenges, one of which is deciding where to locate your business. If you are starting from the ground up, you might not afford to acquire or rent a facility. Clients may have varied preferences, leading to new market opportunities if you provide services in multiple locations.

  • Home business

  • Mobile nail technician

  • Renting a salon room

  • Setting up your salon

Finding the Right Business Location

Finding the correct location is a vital first step if you are thinking about starting your own business. To determine which location is ideal for you and your clients, you should conduct thorough research.

  • Ensure your salon is easy to find.

  • Understand the local area.

  • Research your competition.

  • Stay close to other relevant businesses.

  • Consider the cost.

  • What size salon do you need?

Business Licenses, Insurance, and Liability Requirements

You should pay particular attention to state and local licensing regulations while beginning your salon. To apply for a business license, you will generally need to register a permanent business address. If you choose to run a business from your home, the requirements may be different. Make sure to check your area's zoning restrictions.

Finding and Retaining Clients

  • Massage

  • High-Quality Photographs

  • Word of Mouth

  • Record-Keeping Systems

  • Social Media
