As a leader, part of your responsibility is to guide your followers on the right path. But a better leader does not only provide direction, but they must also be willing to help their followers along their journey.
Knowing to Share the Power
Being in a position of leadership gives people a sense of power and superiority. But servant leaders don't only exercise power. They also share it with their team of employees. Power can be shared by:

Servant leadership differs from traditional leadership by always prioritizing the welfare of others. Servant leaders must always focus on his team's needs and want, how to achieve this, and how it will make them successful in the long run.

A servant leader's primary goal is to help employees succeed and grow in the company. Part of their responsibility is to encourage, mentor, and motivate his team. You can support employees grow by:

Democratic Leadership Style
Democratic leadership places great importance on the input and opinions of the team. It tries to create a consensus through some sort of vote or census. Every team member is given the opportunity to voice their opinion. This leadership style is highly ideal but can be a problem when situations require quick, decisive action.
Laissez-Faire Style
This leadership style allows employees a high degree of freedom in carrying out their tasks. Leaders are more concerned with the quality of output but are always available for support or advice if needed.
Leading by Example
Servant leaders often inspire their employees by being an example. Be becoming an example; you can show that success is possible. Employees will continuously require guidance, motivation, and structure. It is your role as a leader to provide help during these situations.
Path-Goal Theory
This leadership style recognizes that not all employees share the same problems. The path-goal theory emphasizes the use of targeted solutions based on individual employee needs and wants. It also requires leaders to help employees achieve their goals by assisting them along their growth path.
Module Four: Share the Power
Leaders with strong personalities may find the idea of sharing their power difficult. After all, leadership is all about having the right to exercise control over others. However, a servant leader knows when to share power with their employees.
Being Empathetic
Being empathetic is easier said than done. Especially for leaders who place themselves above their employees. Empathy requires you to place yourself in another person's situation, giving you a better appreciation of what an employee can be going through. When you empathize, you can understand and recognize the source of the problem. This, in turn, gives you the ability to create more targeted solutions to your employee's concerns.
Learn to Delegate
Leaders fail to delegate simply because they lack confidence in their employees. As a servant leader, you must help your employees grow by trusting their abilities.
Their Success is Your Success
A basic concept in servant leadership is knowing that your employee’s success is your success. You can help your employees become successful by coaching them, guiding them, and offering them advice when needed.
Know When to Step In
As a servant leader, we may become too zealous in assisting our employees in every challenge they face. But as a leader, we must also know when to step back and when to step in. Helping your employees grow is also giving them the strength to discover solutions to their problems.

Some of the great qualities that describe a servant leader include good listening skills, empathy, power of persuasion, and excellent communication skills. Although servant leaders may possess several leadership styles, they must exhibit the must-have qualities of a servant leader.
Listening Skills
Listening skills will always be a huge plus for both leaders and employees. However, when it comes to leadership styles, listening skills are critical for servant leaders. Servant leaders know the importance of listening skills since they are constantly engaged with their employees.
Persuasive Powers
Persuasion should not be confused with authority and power. Being persuasive is the art of using your knowledge and expertise to enlighten and encourage others.
Recognizes Opportunities
Servants leaders must have the ability to understand an employee's potential or a particular skill set. It is possible since servant leaders spend a great deal of their time communicating and observing their employees.
Relates to Employees
Being able to connect is like being empathetic but requires a little more emotional involvement. Even leaders start as employees, and harnessing this experience makes it easier for you to relate with your employees.
Module Six: Barriers to Servant Leadership
We’ve discussed several qualities and characteristics that make a great servant leader. In this module, you will learn possible barriers to servant leadership.
Excessive Criticism
Criticisms can be helpful when delivered constructively. Excessive criticism, on the other hand, can be detrimental to your employee’s self-esteem and affect their performance. A servant leader must review any form of criticism and know how to deliver the feedback constructively.
Doing Everything Yourself
Leaders who decide to do everything themselves show little confidence in their employees. It only leads to failure because the leader is unable to focus on his major task, ensuring that everybody on the team is performing.
Sitting on the Sidelines
This type of leader refuses to get his hands dirty and is content with shouting instructions from the sidelines. A servant leader is one who is constantly engaged with their employees. Not only sending instructions but ensuring that everything is done correctly by performing the task if need be.
Demanding from Employees
Some leaders, because of their position, believe that they are entitled to demand what they need from employees. They expect their employees to follow blindly. It might work for some, but most employees might simply move on to another employer.
Module Seven: Building a Team Community
A team is composed of several individuals, each with their unique talents and skills. A leader must know how to bring these skills together for the good of the team.
Identify the Group Needs
Each member is different, and a leader must identify the needs of each member. Only by doing this can a leader truly identify the group's needs.
Compliment Member Skills
When building a team, it is crucial that you first identify the skills or talents of each member. This makes it possible for you to assign each member to a task they are most qualified to do.
Create Group Goals
Your role as a leader includes explaining the objectives and the reason why the team was created. Group goals must be created with every member in mind and should include input from each member.
Encourage Communication
Communication is an important element in a team’s success. It allows the efficient exchange of ideas between team members.
Make it Challenging
It can be a tall order since a leader may not be aware of what their employees can handle at one time. An employer must constantly challenge his employees for them to grow. Without a stimulating and challenging workplace, an employee may finally decide to go.
Provide Resources
Sometimes the simplest form of motivation is to ensure that your employees have everything they need to succeed.
Ask for Employee Input
Engage your employees by asking for input. Ask them how they would like to be rewarded, what drives them to do better, or ask them how you can make their job easier.
Offer Incentives
Bonus and incentive programs are a popular tool for motivating employees. Incentives can come in many forms, including monetary bonuses, gifts, and even promotions.
Module Nine: Be a Mentor
Mentors are often interchanged with managers or coaches. A good leader must also be a mentor to ensure their employees are getting the boost they need.
Establish Goals
Give your employees the best tools to help them establish and set goals. Start by asking them what they want to achieve and how they want to reach it.
Know When to Praise or Criticize
Praising and criticizing are two important tools for any manager. However, a good leader must know when to use each to motivate or redirect his employee. Frequent praises diminish its luster. Over criticizing can affect an employee’s self-esteem and drives away their desire to work.
Create a Supportive Environment
A leader must create an environment that is conducive to working. They must build a supportive environment that is safe and without fear of humiliation. As a leader, you can create a supportive environment by simply being available whenever they need help.
Create an Open Door Policy
Whether mentoring a new employee or a new group, one of the first things you should establish is to create an open-door policy. Let your employees know that they can come to you with any concerns or share new ideas.
