Here, we discuss the leadership styles from Paul Hersey and Kenneth Blanchard as expressed in their Situational Leadership Model.
The Situation Leadership model – Leadership styles based on the follower:
Situational Leadership – Telling
This is referred to as the lowest level of leadership style. It focuses on task completion rather than a relationship with the employee.
Situational Leadership – Selling
This style of leadership is suited for followers who have developed some competence and commitment. The follower requires convincing. But is open to becoming cooperative and motivated. Leaders must still focus on tasks but now includes developing a relationship with the follower.
Situational Leadership – Participating
Leadership style must now address the needs of a follower who is competent. They might still show some inconsistency and not yet fully committed. Leaders must focus on supporting the follower. Leadership is now targeted towards building a relationship and less on tasks.
Situational Leadership – Delegating
This is the highest level where a follower displays a high level of competency. Leaders can now delegate tasks with little intervention needed. Continued praise is not required but should be given for outstanding performance when appropriate.

Section Five: Modeling the Way
The best leaders lead by example. Leadership is front and center. When things go wrong, a leader must take responsibility and develop solutions to prevent this from happening in the future.
Determining your Way
Select your brand of leadership and understand the different challenges presented by each. Learn about the ideas and philosophies that make these leadership styles successful.
Being an Inspirational Role Model
Leadership is for the strong of heart. Leaders must be inspirational role models who people of honesty, integrity, and treat everybody fairly. As a leader, you must be open to criticism and must be able to identify the source.
Influencing Other’s Perspectives
Leaders must be perceived as honest, caring, and dedicated to inspire others. The best way to influence others is not to try to influence someone. Keep an open mind and be ready to listen to others. When people feel they are being heard, they will be more than willing to follow even if they have disagreement with the methods or goals.
Section Six: Inspiring a Shared Vision
In this section, we discuss the key to true leadership and how to inspire a shared vision among your followers.
Choosing Your Vision
Determine what you want to accomplish and create a plan of how to get there. Your vision will give you and your followers a sense of direction.
Communicating Your Vision
Communications are more than words. These also include actions which are often more powerful than words. Communicate your vision more effectively by using a simple catch phrase. This makes it easier for people to remember and reduces the chances of your vision being misinterpreted.
Identifying the Benefit of Others
Giving your followers a sense of ownership or being a part of a larger, successful organization is better than simply rewarding your followers. When followers are engaged, they are willing to work for longer hours if they feel a sense of accomplishment.
Section Seven: Challenging the Process
As a leader you must learn to search for opportunities to change, grow, innovate, and improve. There will always be risks but you must learn to balance risks with success. Never be afraid to ask questions, solutions can be found in the least likely places.
Developing Your Inner Innovator
Innovation is not just introducing a new process or procedure. These changes must be based upon stated goals and research. You must be able to reverse engineer, breakdown things into their simplest components. Leaders must also display critical thinking abilities and even go “outside the box.”
Seeing Room for Improvement
Mediocrity is counterproductive when creating a strong vision. Anything less than perfect, a 95 percent increase in productiveness for example can most likely result to 90 percent success. When being “good enough” is accepted, going beyond your goals and objectives becomes difficult to achieve. However, goals must not be unrealistic or unattainable. This can quickly lead to frustration among you and your followers.
Set high goals based on your vision. These should have a certain degree of difficulty but not impossible to achieve. Be ready to adjust goals, if these are proving to be difficult or frustrating for your followers.
Lobbying for Change
To call for change, you must first inspire people to your vision. Be ready to research and enter always be prepared for a meeting. Use charts, graphs and data and fact-based presentations. Anticipate possible questions and be prepared with solutions and answers.
Section Eight: Enabling Others to Act
As a leader your role is to ensure that your followers do their task to the best of their abilities. You cannot do your followers work for them. The goal of the Hersey-Blanchard situational leadership model as will be discussed in detail in the Leadership and Influence Online Certificate course is to delegate tasks without a lot of oversight.
Encouraging Growth in Others
A positive attitude is a must to become an effective leader. Be ready to accept failure both from you and your followers. Failure is something that should never be rewarded. But we should also understand that no one is immune to failure. Be a constructive leader and encourage growth in others.
Creating Mutual Respect
Respect begets respect. This courtesy should be given to everybody regardless of the position or level in the organization. Make yourself available and show genuine interest in what they do. Be ready to answer questions, if you are perceived as someone who is knowledgeable you don’t only earn their respect but also inspire them to do better.
The Importance of Trust
Trust is the result of respect. Delivering on your promises can help you quickly build trust. Manage expectations by taking into consideration possible difficulties in the process. Give others a sense that they can rely on you. These simple gestures will go a long way in building trust among your peers. As a leader you might ask your followers to perform tasks that they don’t agree with. A relationship built on trust makes you an effective leader who can motivate others to follow your instructions sometimes even blindly.
Section Nine: Encouraging the Heart
Most contend that the development of the “Human Resources,” formerly known as the “Personnel Department” was a huge setback. This is because “resource” is something that is valuable if it is functional. Once it loses it purpose, these resources are disposed.
Sharing Rewards
Shared efforts deserve shared rewards. Some followers may feel betrayed by leaders who fail to share the limelight or a portion of their rewards. If the reward or promotion can’t be shared, acknowledging your team by giving a party or free lunch is equally appreciated.
