Critical Thinking Online Certificate Course - Outline

Module One - Getting Started

Module Two - Components of Critical Thinking

Critical thinking is a critical component of decision making. But it is more than just making judgements but also how we take action. In this module, we discuss the components of critical thinking.

  • Applying Reason -The ability to reason is a key component of critical thinking. Reasoning requires logic to determine what follows what.
  • Open-mindedness - is essential to learning. It is important for revising current understanding when relevant evidence or arguments go against it. It enables us to learn by allowing us to be open to alternatives.
  • Analysis - This component allows us to discriminate and access information. Analysis allows us to breakdown complex ideas allowing us to understand new or difficult concepts.
  • Logic - Logic and reasoning may appear similar but are not the same. Logic provides the rules for deriving valid conclusions.

Module Three - Non-Linear Thinking

Problems are usually approached following a step-by-step fashion based on critical thinking. However, when problems are approached in a different order, this is called linear-thinking.

  • Step Out of Your Comfort Zone - Our decisions are often based on past experiences. Non-linear thinking requires us to step out of our comfort zones and discover new things using a different perspective.
  • Don’t Jump to Conclusions - Mistakes are often the results of jumping into conclusions or making decisions even before we have all the facts.
  • Expect and Initiate Change - Nothing stays the same, expect changes and take charge to make this change.
  • Being Ready to Adapt - After accepting that change is inevitable, we must be ready to adapt to these changes.

Module Four - Logical Thinking

Logical thinking requires steps. It is checking the components of arguments and making connections between them which is also called reasoning.

  • Ask the Right Questions - Logical thinking starts with asking the right questions. As a logical thinker should begin reasoning by asking many questions. It should start with determining the statement is fact or a value, and not to confuse the two.
  • Organize the Data - The second step in the logic process, we organize the information by making connections. This can include breaking up the information and laying out the premises.
  • Evaluate the Information - After organizing the information, logic dictates that this information be evaluated if it is valid. Conclusions must only be made after the distinction between truth and validity is made.
  • Draw Conclusions - Conclusions are made once data has been collected, organized, and evaluated. Conclusions based on deductive reasoning are made from valid premises while conclusions based on inductive reasoning are drawn from conclusions, or a hypothesis.

Module Five - Critical Thinker (Part 1)

This part of the Critical Thinking Online Certificate course discusses the characteristics of critical thinkers.

  • Active Listening - The best communicators are active listeners.
  • Be Curios – the main goal of a teacher to spark curiosity and engage their students
  • Be disciplined – critical thinking requires reasoning and rationale
  • Be Humble – Humility relates to having an open mind. Arrogance the opposite of humility, can be a strong barrier to accepting information for what it really is

  • Seeing the Big Picture – this is about making connections. Ideas increase in significance when it relates to other ideas.
  • Objectivity – this helps us to be more deliberate or thorough. This characteristic helps us to engage ore thoughtfully and deliberately.
  • Using Your Emotions – you should not entirely eliminate your emotions when thinking critically. Emotions also play a critical role in critical thinking, but this should not cloud your judgement.
  • Being Self-Aware – we should be aware of one’s feeling, feelings, and opinions. This is the starting point of critical thinking.

Module Seven - Evaluate the Information

After looking at some steps in evaluation information using logic, we will take a closer look into how to properly evaluate information.

  • Making Assumptions – these are statements which have no prior proof or evidence. These are generally unstated or mentally held.
  • Watch out for the Bias – this is something innate and often difficult to completely eliminate. However, when thinking critically, we must avoid confirmation bias.
  • Ask Clarifying questions – it is important that we always ask the right questions. But of equal importance is to ask clarifying questions.
  • SWOT Analysis- this can be very useful in helping us think more clearly. This is often used in most business and marketing situations.

  • Asking Why – this allows you to go beyond the usual information or data.
