Pilates Certification - Outline

Module 1 – An Introduction to Pilates

Part 1: Pilates history and evolution

Over the last 10 or 20 years, Pilates has grown exponentially in popularity. Indeed, there are few gyms and health studios that don’t have Pilates classes on the timetable now alongside aerobics and spin sessions.

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of mind-body exercise aimed at bringing the body back into balance.

The History of Pilates

Pilates is named after its creator, Joseph Pilates. Born near Düsseldorf, Germany, in 1883, Pilates was a sickly child, suffering from asthma, rickets and other ailments.

Why Practice Pilates?

Life today can be distracting. We work longer hours than our pre-industrial ancestors. In our world, we are digitally connected - and, therefore, available - 24/7.

Mind over Matter

Perhaps you are still a little puzzled by what it means to connect the mind, body and breath (which, as the key to life, constitutes the ‘spirit’ for many), and why this creates optimum health. Think of it this way: Have you ever sprained an arm, a leg or some other part of your body?

Part 2: The specific benefits of Pilates

A fascinating and favorable element of Pilates is that you don’t attain one benefit without the others. Whereas alternative fitness methods may concentrate on certain muscle groups or individual body areas, in Pilates all movement radiates outward from the core and needs the combined engagement of the mind, breath and body.

  • Rehabilitation
  • Weight Loss

Module 2 – The Pilates Powerhouse and the Anatomy of Movement

Part 1: The Pilates powerhouse in the last module, we mentioned ‘the powerhouse'. This module aims to teach you how to utilize the powerhouse competently. It gives you a basic understanding of what constitutes the powerhouse as well as the muscle groups that affect movements here.

Main function of the powerhouse:

  1. Stabilization
  2. Promoting good body mechanics
  3. Mind-body activation

What is good posture?

To develop good posture, you have to know what it looks like. Imagine a visible thread going straight through the body starting from the center of the skull.

The core, spine and body alignment

To truly understand how to correctly align your body both during exercises and in the course of everyday life, a knowledge of basic anatomy is helpful.

The Core Muscles

The core muscles are central to using the powerhouse. You need to strengthen and stabilize your core in order to move your whole body more efficiently.

Module 2 – The Pilates Powerhouse and the Anatomy of Movement

Part 2: Pilates Exercise

Muscles Supporting the Spine

The muscles involved in this support are mainly the back and the abdominals. The abdominals attach to the ribs, pelvis and indirectly to the lumbar spine while the muscles of the back – the erector spinae and the gluteal muscles - are layered, with each layer playing an important part in balancing the spine.

Neutral Spine

In Pilates, a ‘neutral spine’ is the position of the spine when all three curves are naturally in good alignment. Whether standing or sitting, this is the strongest position for the spine and the one that is necessary for correct performance of Pilates exercises.

Pelvis

The pelvis is the bowl-shaped structure that connects the lower limbs of the body to the axial skeleton (i.e. the central axis of the body that consists of the skull, spine and ribs).

Neutral Pelvis

The neutral alignment of the pelvis happens when the alignment of the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS), or the front corners of your hip bones, and the pubic bone are level with each other. When your spine is in a neutral position, so too will your pelvis be in a neutral position.

Part 3: Pilates Exercises for Good Posture

The Pelvic Curl

The pelvic curl is a gentle warm-up exercise for the spine and core that also helps coordinate breath and movement.

Dolphin Plank

Plank, or Dolphin Plank, is one of the most popular exercises for developing core strength and stability. When carrying out this exercise correctly, not only are the core stabilization muscles engaged but so too are the arms, glutes, and legs active.

Roll Down

The roll up can be challenging, and a lot of core strength and a strong spine is needed to perfect it.

Module 3 – The Pilates Class Exercise Equipment

Part 1: Basic movements and warm-ups

One of the wonderful aspects of Pilates is the wonderful range of exercises that are presented. Originally, Joseph Pilates created a series of 34 contrology matwork exercises that were taught in a specific order.

Many traditional Pilates classes concentrate wholly on these exercises in their classical form, with little deviation. Others, however, allow for modified versions (particularly when teaching beginners) or they introduce props.

Clothes and basic equipment

Like any exercise system, dressing correctly and using the right equipment is essential for a positive Pilates experience.

Clothing

Ensure that the workout clothes you wear for a Pilates class are comfortable enough to let you move and stretch. However, clothing should not be too baggy.

Pilates Mat

A Pilates’ mat is generally thicker than most yoga mats. This is because Pilates has less standing poses than yoga (for these poses in yoga feeling rooted to the floor is important) and certain challenging exercises need to be carried out with the protection of good padding.

Basic Movements and Warm-ups

  • Starting position – Neutral spine
  • Head nod
  • Head nod
  • Arms over

Part 2: Original 34 Contrology Exercises

Ten Primary Pilates Exercises

  1. The Hundred
  2. The Roll Over
  3. Single Leg Circles
  4. Single Leg Stretch
  5. Double Leg Stretch
  6. The Spine Stretch
  7. The Teaser
  8. Spine Twist
  9. The Side Bend
  10. The Saw

Part 3: Pilates Equipment

From the start, Joseph Pilates used a rich variety of equipment for his exercise system. This included the reformer, stability chair, the trap table and more. While this Home Study Course caters towards those interested in mat exercises only, it is good to know what each of these apparati (as Pilates himself called them) looks like and does.

  • Magic Circles
  • Resistance bands
  • Stability Balls

Module 4 – Specific Pilates Courses

Part 1: Pilates for pregnancy

At various times in our life, we may change the way we exercise. For example, a young woman preparing for the birth of her child will no doubt exercise differently to that of an older person attempting to stay fit.

General Pilates exercises to avoid in pregnancy:

  • Side leg raises or other exercises that require you to lie on your side. This can place too much force on the sacroiliac joints which can pull the pelvis out of alignment.
  • Exercises with double leg lifts.
  • Anything that involves overstretching as your growing body will be prone to instability.

Part 2: Pilates for weight loss

Many people wonder whether Pilates assists in weight loss. While the short answer is ‘yes’, there are some things to take into consideration.

Benefits of Pilates for the overweight

Pilates is often associated with people who are long, lean and t looking. For many, looking like this is their goal and the reason they started to do Pilates in the first place.

Pilates Exercises for Weight Loss

  • Toe Dip
  • Single Leg Circles
  • The One Leg Forward Kick
  • Criss Cross
  • Swimming
  • Leg Pull

Part 3: Pilates for the older adult

As we age it’s imperative that we continue to keep strong and fit t. However, so many exercises can be hard on the body and run high risks of injury.

Benefits of Pilates on Certain Ageing Ailments

  • Arthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis

Module 5 – Teaching Pilates

Part 1: Your role as a Pilates teacher

Teaching Pilates, or, indeed, any kind of exercise, to a group of people can be an exhilarating and at the same time, daunting experience. Your students want to learn and you want to help them succeed. However, you must be able to motivate them to do the movements in a manner that is both friendly and firm, so that they are empowered to carry out the exercises precisely, and safely, and end up feeling satisfied that you are guiding them correctly.

Your Role as a Pilates Teacher

As a Pilates teacher or instructor, your role is really to provide high-quality Pilates experience for your students. It is not enough for you to know Pilates exercises inside and out; you also need to know how to impart that knowledge successfully to your students in a way that enables them to carry out the exercises precisely and safely.

The basics of teaching movements

  • Lay the foundation
  • Focus on the powerhouse
  • Connect with the flow

Part 2: Structuring a Class

As mentioned in an earlier module, Joseph Pilates recommended a specific order for the original Pilates mat exercises. Most teachers of the traditional method continue this order in their workouts, while others have loosened the structure depending on the needs of their students.

Maintaining Control

There is no race to the finish line in a Pilates class. Participation and perfection is key. By that we mean that the students need to continue being engaged throughout the class but they also need to learn each move precisely.

Understanding the Risks for Injury in a Pilates Class

Whether you’re teaching a multi-level group class or privately tutoring an individual, there are always risks for injury in a Pilates class.

Part 3: Sample class

One way to limit the possibility of injury is to also limit the size of a class. Though it may be tempting to kick start your career as a Pilates teacher by instructing classes of 20 people at a time, it’s easier to see accidents in the making if you have less than 10 people per class.

Module 6 – Setting Up your own Pilates Business

Part 1: Business structure

Opening your own Pilates business can be hugely rewarding. The idea of being your own boss, running a business that’s geared towards helping others, and sharing a method of exercise that you’re passionate about, is such an irresistible idea you might wonder why more people aren’t doing likewise!

Getting Started

Business Structure

Do you want to run your own studio or hire a venue a few hours a week to teach your classes? You might prefer to be a Pilates teacher-for-hire instead, and take the worry out of paying rents or class hours by working in an already established Pilates studio.

Experience

This Pilates Home Study Course is a great first step towards opening your Pilates business. However, it is only the beginning.

Part 2: Writing a business plan

When you decide to start your own studio or develop yourself as an independent Pilates teacher you have to start thinking of yourself as a business. One of the most important first steps, particularly if you’re intent on opening a studio, is the development of a business plan.

Generally, it will include:

  • An executive summary
  • A company description (this is where you work out what really makes your Pilates business/studio special)
  • A market analysis (the competition and target demographics)
  • Details of the business structure

Part 3: Setting up a Studio and Pricing

If you have your heart set on running your own studio space then there are a number of things that you must consider.

Pricing

Small Pilates studios typically offer smaller and more intimate sessions than a general fitness club, with more personalized attention, so this means they can often charge more for their services.

Part 4: Marketing

When you set up your own business, regardless of whether you’re a ‘young gun for hire’ or have your own studio, it’s important that people know about you and find where to find you.

Local Media

Depending on how popular your local paper and/or radio station is, it might be a good idea to consider taking out some advertising with them.

Website

As a small business it’s essential that you have your own website, highlighting your services as a Pilates teacher or details of your studio and what it offers.

Recognition & Accreditation

Upon completion of your course assessment, you will receive 3 certificates. An accredited certificate from the awarding body relating to your course, a CPD certificate displaying the number of CPD points earned from the course and a certificate of completion.

This course is registered with the CMA (Complementary Medical Association), which is internationally recognised as the elite force in professional, ethical complementary medicine by professional practitioners, doctors and, increasingly, by the general public. Upon completion of the course you can gain membership to the CMA, which in addition to supplying a professional accreditation, offers a number of benefits.
