Nail Technician Course Online – Outline

Unit One – Nail Enhancements, Health and Safety

The systems can be applied over a false nail tip, or applied onto the natural nail to give extra strength. If applied over a tip, the service is called tips and overlays. Acrylic and Gel can also be applied over a form, which is a flexible foil mold that fits just under the natural nail tip and provides a base for you to sculpt? a tip.

Acrylic

The acrylic, or liquid and powder system as it is often called, is considered to be the strongest system used in the nail industry.

UV Gel

The UV Gel system is a pre-mixed product that comes ready to use by the nail technician. The gel usually has to be cured under a UV or LED lamp.

Wraps

Unlike natural fabrics such as silk, cotton and linen, which soak up resin, fiberglass retains its integrity and adds flexibility and strength to the resin, so making it the most popular choice of wrap medium.

Health and Safety – Keeping Well

The long-term comfort and safety of yourself and the client is paramount, and it is important to have the correct working environment when working with nail enhancements.

  • Ventilation
  • Facts about dust
  • Overexposure to the products
  • Temperature
  • Lighting
  • Noise
  • General comfort

Repetitive strain injury (RSI)

This is a general term used to describe different types of soft tissue injury caused by repetitive movements over a period of time. Common symptoms include tenderness, pain, swelling and weakness in the forearms, wrist, hands and fingers.

Carpal tunnel Syndrome (CTS)

CTS can be found in the wrist. There are two fibrous bands of tissue that cross over the wrist and form a channel called the carpal tunnel. The nerves and tendons that control the wrist and hand pass through these bands. When an injury occurs in this area, the swelling pinches the nerves together, causing pain and discomfort. If these symptoms are ignored the condition will worsen and become permanent.

Disinfection and Sterilization

As a nail technician it is very important to maintain hygienic tools to help prevent cross-infection (spreading) of harmful bacteria, viruses and fungal infections for both clients and technicians.

Unit Two – Becoming a Nail Technician

Being an approachable person, who inspires confidence in themselves through their appearance, attitude and ability.

Personal appearance and attitude

As a nail technician you are required to present a professional image at all times.

Code of Ethics

In any business, whether home-based or in a salon, it is important to understand the meaning of code of ethics.

General Behavior

As a nail technician you will be carrying out a range of different treatments on a variety of clients, therefore it is imperative that you possess certain qualities.

Greeting the client

The reception that you give your client is your chance to make a good first impression, so it is crucial that you are polite and on time to greet and advise clients, as well as making appointments and taking payment.

Making and recording appointments accurately is a very important role for a nail technician. The appointment system ensures that your working day runs effectively, and this helps towards creating a smooth and calm working environment.

Recommending Products and Sales

Once you have completed your treatment it is essential to recommend certain products and tools to prolong the longevity of your client’s enhancements.

A professional setting

You must set up and have everything you need ready for your client. So, make sure that you have all your nail equipment and basic products.

Marketing and Starting your own Salon/Nail Business

To achieve beautiful nail enhancements successfully you need to be in the correct working environment. It is essential to have excellent lighting, adequate ventilation, sufficient heating and satisfactory electricity.

Marketing

For those who are interested in starting their own salon or nail business, there are many factors to consider when marketing such a business.

Planning

Planning is a central aspect of starting up one’s own business. Important decisions have to be taken about a range of issues, such as the location and whether to take on a business partner, or whether to register as a limited company.

Ownership or partnership

Ownership can be a difficult decision to take, and a step to plan. You need to consider the advantages and possible disadvantages of seeking a partner (or more than one partner) for a potential business venture.

Legal status

Whether or not a partnership has been established, the next significant step to take is to decide on the legal status of the business.

Presently, one can decide between different forms of business, each with certain pre-conditions, namely:

  • Sole Proprietor
  • Partnerships
  • Limited Company

Location

An appropriate location for a business is crucial to ensure that the clientele sought will be available for the services offered. Positioning a salon alongside or near other businesses boosts the market opportunities and attracts the general public passing by who may want to pop into the salon, for example, for a quick re-varnish, manicure or set of enhancements after shopping.

Competition

Whenever anyone begins any form of trading or business, there will inevitably be some degree of competition.

Advertising

There are many ways to advertise a business today. A number of useful ways of advertising a nail business is briefly listed and described in the following section.

Website and Internet

Many salons and small businesses have a small website where their basic services and prices can be found, along with contact details and opening hours. You can get a basic website set up for as little as 500, and in this day and age, it is the favored way of finding information for many clients.

Social Media Marketing

Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Tumblr, YouTube... The list of online social networking tools seems endless, yet continues to grow. These tools have become an essential component to a business marketing plan, termed Social Media Marketing. Through these platforms, you can interact with your current customers, engage potential customers, monitor the practices and performance of your competitors, and network with other businesses.

Unit Three – Anatomy and Physiology

The arm, hand and nails are the focus of this treatment, and while the service is superficial to enhance the appearance of the hand and nail, you must understand the structure of the nail, anatomy, physiology and conditions that can affect the outcome.

The Bones of the arm and hand

Muscles of the hand and arm

Blood Supply

The Skin

  • Protection
  • Heat regulation
  • Sensation
  • Excretion and Secretion
  • Formation of Vitamin D

The Dermis

The dermis is attached to the epidermis by projections from the dermis called papillae. The dermis is the inner layer which consists of fibrous and connective tissue.

Sweat Glands

The main part of the sweat gland is situated in the dermis. The duct, however, spirals towards the surface through the epidermis. The gland is made up of a tightly convoluted tube which is lined by cubical epithelium and surrounded by a network of capillaries.

Nails

Nails are modifications of the epidermis, and are horny plates corresponding to the claws or hooves of animals. Nails are developed from the stratum lucidum of the nail bed, and composed of densely packed keratinized cells.

Unit Four – Nail Disorders and Shapes

It is highly unlikely that clients will request a manicure if they are aware that they have any condition that would contra-indicate treatment. Not all clients will know, which is why it is important that you can identify a healthy nail and if there is a possibility of a contra-indication present. This is to protect you from the possibility of cross infection or making the condition worse.

Contra-indications

  • Severely bitten nails
  • Bruised nail
  • Dermatitis
  • Psoriasis
  • Eczema
  • Wart

Treatable nail conditions

  • Weak Nails
  • Brittle Nails
  • Overgrown cuticles
  • Hangnail
  • Furrows

Factors Affecting Growth

Fingernails grow faster than toenails, approximately five times faster. The average growth for a fingernail is 3-4 mm per month. However, there are factors that can affect the rate of growth. It takes from 3 to 6 months for a fingernail to re-grow completely.

Unit Five – Manicure

The word manicure means care of the hands, and the purpose of this treatment is to improve the appearance of the hands and nails by cleansing, nourishing and beautifying them. A manicure is essential to clients who have nail enhancements, as well as those who do not, or who have had them removed. We will start and maintain the enhancement service with manicure to ensure that the client has the very best treatment or service.

  • Consultation
  • Medication
  • Illnesses
  • Allergies

Manicure Procedure and Correct use of tools

  1. Perform the consultation and agree the nail length and shape with the client
  2. Wash your hands
  3. Ask the client to remove their jewelry and put it in the bowl, which should be visible throughout the service
  4. Fill the manicure bowl with warm, soapy water
  5. Sanitize the client’s hands with sterilizing wipes and check for contra-indications
  6. Remove any nail polish and inspect again for nail disorders

Aftercare/homecare advice

  • Use acetone-free polish remover to remove nail polish
  • File the nails with a soft-sided emery board from side to center
  • Wear gloves when carrying out household chores
  • Have regular manicures every 2-4 weeks

Massage movements

  1. Apply massage cream or oil to arm, elbow and hand using effleurage (long) strokes from the wrist to the
  2. elbow
  3. Make circles with your thumb pads (thumb circles) over the elbow
  4. Using alternative stokes (one hand on top of arm other hand under arm), effleurage up and down the arm 6
  5. Inner arm massage up the sides using thumb and forefinger 3 times
  6. Outer arm massage up the sides using thumb and forefinger 3 times

Warm oil manicure

Warm oil is an excellent treatment for dry, brittle, weak nails or extremely dry skin. It is extremely recommended after the removal of nail enhancements to help nourish the natural nails.

French Manicure

This is the popular effect where the free edge is painted white and the rest of the nail is painted pink it looks like a natural nail and very healthy.

Pedicure

As mentioned in the introduction, pedicures involve the treatment of the nails on the feet. In this section we will briefly describe the pedicure routine, and pedicure contra-indications.

Unit Six – Starting on Tips

Products, tools and equipment

To create beautiful nail enhancements, it is important you have high quality products, correct tools and equipment. It is really worth investing in an excellent product that will give your clients long-lasting and stunning nails.

Setting up the work station

Make certain you have all the correct products and tools to hand, either laid out on tissue on your nail desk or contained within your nail desk. To avoid back, neck and arm strain, ensure your chair and nail desk are at the correct working height. An adjustable comfortable chair that has a cushioned back rest would be ideal.

Health & Safety

Before a nail treatment can begin you must ensure that the following list of health & safety rules and regulations are adhered to.

Tip Application

While we will be practicing on false tips, at this point of the procedure if working on a real client, we would prepare the natural nail.

Unit Seven – Application of Liquid and Powder

Liquid and Powder Chemistry

Your liquid is a monomer that on curing becomes a polymer. Your powder is a blend of co-polymers that are cured monomers. The cured monomers act as carriers for pigment and curing agents.

  1. Linear polymers
  2. Cross-linked polymers
  3. Reinforced cross-linked polymers

Stages of Acrylic

Acrylic products have different stages that they go through while you use them. Understanding each of the stages of your particular system will help you master your applications more efficiently and proficiently.

  1. The Wet Stage
  2. The Working Stage
  3. Molding Stage
  4. Curing Stage

Unit Eight – Infills and Maintenance

In this section, we will be covering working on a real client, adapting the service to suit and be comfortable for the client, and recognizing when to recommend an infill and cover some maintenance issues.

We will also take a brief overview of advanced services that you can progress on to should you decide to opt for further training.

Working on a real client

Now that you have learned about working on the hand trainer, you are ready to cover the subject of applying your skills to a real client.

Application procedure

The technician ideally should only be wearing a wedding band, as lots of jewelry harbors bacteria. Before any nail enhancement service is carried out, check both hands for contra-indications. Apply sanitizing product to both your hands and those of your clients.

Infills and repairs

Infills are required approximately every 2-3 weeks, depending upon your client’s nail growth. The nail enhancement will grow up towards the free edge of the nail, leaving a new part of Zone 3 exposed.

Repairs

Repairs are carried out the same way as a general liquid and powder overlay. The only difference is that the natural nail will be split, chipped at the free edge or weak, and an overlay of liquid and powder is used to hold the split or chip together until it grows out.

Unit Nine – Application of UV Gel Overlays Over Plastic Nail Tips

Oligomers

These products are normally associated with the gel system. They are very similar to the monomer and polymer system used in liquid and powder or acrylic enhancements. Gels are pre-mixed and are cured under a UV (ultra-violet) light for approximately two minutes each layer.

Ultra Violet Light

The tubes in most nail lamps release only UVA light to cure nails. Tubes can vary between 5 and 9 watts, and lamps usually have 1-6 tubes. There are many lamps available, but most will only give out 38-45 watts of UV, which is not harmful to the skin.

Under curing

The major cause of issues regarding inadequate application of overlays with any gel system is that the gel has not sufficiently cured. One cause can be the use of an incorrect lamp for a particular system. Not all lamps are created equal, and some give off more UV energy than others.

Working with UV Gel

When using any system, it is always advisable to work in three zones. Before applying to the zones, it is important to get the consistency and quantity of the beads correct to avoid flooding the nail wall and wasting product, this could also lead to allergic reactions should the product come into contact with the skin.

Unit Ten – Infills and Maintenance

In this lesson we will cover how to maintain the enhancements, so that they look good all the time, as well as how to remove them safely.

Infills and repairs

Infills are required approximately every 2-3 weeks depending upon your client’s nail growth. The nail enhancement will grow up towards the free edge of the nail, leaving a new part of Zone 3 exposed.

Repairs

Repairs are carried out the same way as a general overlay. The only difference is that the natural nail will be split, chipped at the free edge or weak, and an overlay of gel is used to hold the split or chip together until it grows out.

Advanced Nail Work

Backfill

A backfill, or a rebalance, as it is sometimes referred to, is usually carried out every 6-8 weeks after approximately 3-4 infill treatments. A backfill is where the entire nail enhancement needs to be filed down. The old product of the white and pink gel needs to be almost removed, leaving barely the natural nail.

Filing/Buffing Off

As the name shows, the nail enhancements are removed using files and buffers. This is a time-consuming practice that can cause damage to the nail plate/bed through the heat produced by filing, and the actual filing itself may go through part of the enhancement and on to the natural nail plate.

Soak off

This involves soaking the nail enhancements in a solvent until the product starts to go soft. The residue of the product is rolled off using an orange stick.

Unit Eleven – Troubleshooting

Tip application and liquid and powder trouble shooting If your tip or liquid and powder application isn’t applied correctly it can result in all sorts of problems. Below is a list of problems that could occur if you do not apply the tips accurately or do not follow the correct mixed ratio for liquid or powder.

Discoloration Guide

Green - Potential bacterial infection

Yellow - Potential fungal infection

White - Potential allergic reaction

Contamination

Any enhancement can discolor. However, to prevent yellowing it is important to identify why the yellowing occurs. If yellowing does occur during or immediately after the application of liquid and powder, this usually means the product has becomes contaminated.
