Soap Making Courses Online Outline

Module 1: Understanding Soap Making

in the last few years, soap has enjoyed an even greater increase in popularity. Much of this has to do with new market trends such as the increase in the use of liquid soap and the growing interest in organic soap or handmade soap market.

By the end of the course you will:

  • Have been introduced to the history of soap
  • Be familiar with the four most popular ways to make handmade soap
  • Understand how to use additives in soap making
  • Have an in-depth appreciation and knowledge of how to blend scent
  • Know how to use exciting layer and swirl design techniques in your soap creations
  • Have a number of recipes to start you off on your soap making journey

Part 1: What is Soap?

Before you start learning how to make soaps, you need to have an understanding of what soap is and how it is formed. Having such knowledge will give you confidence in moving forward with your soap making.

The First Soaps

The first soaps were likely the saps of certain plants, which contained a compound called saponi. Examples of these include the soap plant (Chlorogalum pomeridianum), whose roots were crushed with water to form a soapy lather, or the soapwort (Saponaria officinalis), a perennial plant usually found in damper soils in woods, hedgerows, and by streams, whose leaves and roots when rubbed or boiled in water to form a foam.

Four Methods of Making Soap

  • Cold Process
  • Hot Process
  • Melt and Pour
  • Rebatching

Part 2: Glossary of Soap-Making Terms

Module 2: What You Need

At the end of this module, you will:

  • Understand the importance of working safely with lye
  • Be aware of the equipment needed to make soap
  • Know the difference between hard and soft oils

Module 2 introduces you to the specific ingredients, including lye and hard and soft oils, that are needed in making homemade soap.

The Importance of Lye

In the previous module, you discovered that ancient soap-makers made their own alkaline of sorts by combining hardwood ashes and water. They then mixed this substance with (animal) fat, boiling it all up over an open fire for many hours before a foamy soap was formed.

  • Taking Precautions When Using Lye
  • How to Mix the Lye Solution
  • Using Glycerin Instead of Lye

Part 2: Soap-Making Equipment

Before you can make soap at home, you need to ensure you have the right equipment. Never start a soap recipe without having all the necessary equipment and ingredients at hand. Topics to be discussed include:

  • Protective Clothing
  • Thermometer
  • Stick Blender
  • Containers
  • Spoons and Spatulas
  • Soap Molds

Part 3: Oils in Soap Making

You can use an array of different oils for your soap, depending on your preference and the recipe that you’re following. Oils have different properties too. For instance, some make a creamier lather, or are more moisturizing than others.

  • Hard and Soft Oils
  • Olive Oil
  • Apricot Kernel Oil
  • Coconut Oil
  • Cocoa Butter
  • Shea Butter

Module 3: Soap Making Process

Part 1: Cold Process

At the end of this module, you will:

  • Understand the four different processes and how to make soap with each
  • Be aware of the challenges as well as the benefits of each method
  • Know how to prepare the lye

In the first module, you learned that there are four basic methods for making soap. You may have been told or read somewhere that one particular process is better than the others, but the truth is how you make soap depends as much on how you want to make soap as anything else.

Cold Process

Though this is generally the most popular method of making soap at home, it is also the most complex.

  • Prepare the Lye
  • Prepare the Base Oils
  • Check Temperatures
  • Mixing in Additives
  • Pouring the Soap
  • Cutting the Soap

Part 2: Hot Process

The initial steps for preparing the lye and base oils are similar to the cold process. However, when it comes to mixing the oil and lye/water solution, the hot process differs. It is best to use a crock pot or a stainless-steel pot on the cooker or stove top.

  • Mixing the Lye and Oils
  • Cooking the Soap
  • Adding Additional Ingredients
  • Scooping Rather Than Pouring
  • Cutting and Curing

Part 3: Melt and Pour Process and Rebatching

With melt and pour soap making, you buy pre-made blocks of uncolored, unscented soap “base” from a craft store or soap supplier. You then melt the soap base in the microwave or a sturdy pot, and once the soap is fully melted, you can move on to the decorating part – adding in botanicals, extra bits of soap shards, colors, scents and other ingredients.

Rebatching

The rebatching, or milled soap method, involves grating up your own soap creations, melting it and adding additional ingredients. It is similar to the melt and pour style of soap making except that you use previously made soaps rather than a pre-made soap base.

Module 4: Soap Additives

At the end of this module, you will:

  • Know how to choose the right additive for your soap
  • Understand the different scent “tones”
  • Be aware of the various botanicals you can use in soap making

Making soap is akin to cooking up different dishes in your kitchen. And just as the best chefs know when to add a sprinkle of this or a soupcon of that, the best soap makers are also keenly aware of which additives to include in their home-made recipes.

Fragrance Oils vs. Essential Oils

One of the most used additives to soap making is scent. And luckily, when it comes to making delicious smelling handmade soap, there are numerous scents to choose from. You can choose between the more natural essential oils or synthetically produced fragrance oils.

Part 2: Blending Essential Oils

The Musicality of Essential Oils

“Each odor note corresponded to a key on his odophone, and in the creation of a happy mixture of many different odors, which we call a “bouquet” and which every finished perfume must be, the creator seeks not only to hit the right notes, but to strike those notes which go with one another.

Part 3: Botanicals and Other Natural Additives

In this section, we look at some of the botanicals you can use in your soap and note how to use them.

Herbs and Flowers

There are numerous herbs and flower petals that you can add to your soaps but, as noted earlier, don’t select them for their color alone as that is rarely sustained during the soap making process.

  • Calendula
  • Lavender
  • Lemon balm
  • Marshmallow Root
  • Mint
  • Rose

Part 4: Recipes

  • Calendula Flowers to Soap Mixture
  • Lavender Soap

Module 5: Color and Soap Making Techniques

At the end of this module, you will:

  • Be familiar with the different forms of colorant
  • How to find colorants in your own kitchen cabinets
  • Have recipes for making colorful and multi-colored soaps

Part 1: Soap Colorants

The reason why color is included in this module is that you are going to learn how to create patterns using colors. However, before you get that far, let’s look at what you can use to create beautiful colored soap.

  • Using Pigment in Cold Process
  • Using Pigment in Melt and Pour

Part 2: Natural Soap Colorants

If you are making 100 per cent natural or organic soap, you may prefer to find color through botanicals.

Clays

Clays are a wonderful natural product that not only add a vast choice of colors but can be used in creating beautiful designs to your soap creations.

Colors from Your Kitchen Cabinet

Though clays are wonderful to use, you may find that the source of creating natural looking colors is much closer to home – your kitchen cabinets, in other words.

Recipe – Turmeric Soap

This turmeric soap recipe includes three different measurements for turmeric. Choose just one amount per batch and note that the more you use, the darker and potentially more speckled your soap will be.

Part 3: Soap Colorants: For Adding Color Swirls

Colors are great for adding swirling designs to your soap, and, as a soap seller, creating something extra special for your customers.

How to Add Color Swirls

Mix up your soap base according to the recipe you’re using. Once you’ve reached the right consistency, divide the soap base into smaller containers.

  • Ladling in Color
  • Hanger Swirls
  • Marble Cake Swirls
  • Column Pours and Funnel Swirls
  • In the Pot Swirl

Recipe – Tiger Zebra Stripe Swirls

Using three colors, divide the mixture into two small and one large container, then add a different color to each.

Part 4: Soap Layering Technique and Top Decorations

While we noted that the cold process worked best for swirling, when it comes to layering, employing the melt and pour method may enable you to get much cleaner, straighter layered lines.

Top Decorations

A popular top decoration for obvious aesthetic reasons is to add petal, hearts or full flower designs. The former is achieved by laying down dollops of soap and using the back of a spoon to create divots into the soap, while the latter two can be created using a chopstick.

Module 6: Just How Feasible is Your Business?

At the end of this module, you will:

  • Know how to write a feasibility study for your business
  • Have the recipes for making colorful and multi-colored soaps

Setting up a business is an exciting prospect. But before you begin pouring your hours, money and all other resources into starting a soap-making empire, it is important to give yourself a head-start on success.

The Popularity of Handmade Soap Businesses

A little over a century ago, making soap at home was a necessary pastime if you wanted to be clean and stave of illness. It was often a tedious activity, just one of many household chores that needed to be addressed.

Part 2: Creating a Feasibility Study

A feasibility study is an evaluation of the practicality of a particular plan or idea. A feasibility study typically includes sections that need to be fully addressed, as follows.

  • Description of Your Business
  • Market Feasibility
  • Technical Feasibility
  • Financial Feasibility
  • Organizational Feasibility

Part 3: Developing a SWOT Analysis

SWOTs are a good tool to use when creating a marketing plan. Once you know where your strong and weak areas are, or what could potentially compromise or aid your success, you will be better positioned to know which marketing routes and tactics to use.

Defining SMART Goals

  • Smart
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Relevant
  • Timed

Module 7: Getting Down to Business – Setting Up

At the end of this module, you will:

  • Understand which business structure suits you best
  • Comprehend the importance of insurance
  • Know how to set up your soap business

Part 1: Deciding on a Business Structure

Another step you must take before you start your business is deciding on the type of business you are setting up.

Sole Traders

This is probably the simplest business structure as it means that you are a self-employed individual. It’s low-cost and clear-cut, with straightforward legal and tax processes.

Partnership

A partnership involves two or more individuals (or companies) pooling their resources together to create a business where the management is shared, along with the profits and debts.

Choosing a Name for Your Business

If you’re setting up as any of the above business structures, you must choose a name for your business and – if you’re going to create a private limited company (Ltd), a limited liability partnership (LLP) or a limited partnership (LP) – you must also register with Companies House.

Part 2: Insurance and Trademarks

It is important that, before you start selling your soap products, you invest in product liability insurance. This will protect your business assets in case your soaps cause injury to any third parties.

  • Trademark and Copyright Protection
  • Trademark Stipulations

Part 3: Suppliers and Trade Associations

You’ll find numerous suppliers of your basic ingredients, additives, tools and accessories online. However, it is a good idea to always read reviews or even contact other soap makers to check out the reliability of certain suppliers.

Joining Trade Associations

While it’s not a necessary part of creating your business, joining trade associations and groups can help ease your entry into the industry.

Module 8: Legal Considerations and Labelling

At the end of this module, you will:

  • Be familiar with the legal considerations of starting a soap business
  • Understand what is contained in the EU Cosmetics Regulations
  • Fully comprehend the importance of labelling

When most people decide to set up a handmade soap business their dream is to create beautiful, aromatic, natural soaps.

The Importance of the EU Cosmetic Regulations

As consumers, most of us buy cosmetic products in good faith. We may read the ingredients, check what further information is revealed on the label, and decide that the product contains what it says it contains and that, equally, it will achieve for us what it promises too.

Background to the European Cosmetics Regulations

The European Cosmetics Regulations were developed in the mid-1970s.

Recognition & Accreditation

Upon completion of your course assessment, you will receive 3 certificates. An accredited certificate from the awarding body relating to your course, a CPD certificate displaying the number of CPD points earned from the course and a certificate of completion.
