1. Mobile Photography: Unlock Your Creativity And Your Smartphone's Potential

The Mobile Photography Course has been created to provide an easy to use guide to unlocking the potential of a piece of equipment that you already own and a creative eye that you may not know that you possess. As smart phones become more and more sophisticated, so do the built-in cameras that they come equipped with. While many of us just use these to take basic point-and-click photographs, they are capable of so much more, with just a little more understanding of photography principles, techniques, and the use of simple, but incredibly powerful (and cheap), editing apps, not to mention the various ways that images can be shared.

After a brief introduction, the course talks students through the basics of understanding the equipment they are using to capture images. This includes information on the difference between images created on a mobile phone compared with that of a DSLR and a point-and-shoot camera, what to consider when choosing a phone for photography, and some useful accessories for your mobile phone.

A lot of what makes an interesting image, interesting is not always about the technical knowhow of the photographer or the use of editing apps (though these certainly help and are taught in the course) but in the composition of the elements within the image itself. The Mobile Photography Course teaches students how to gain an ‘eye’ for a good image through some basic photography principles that can be incorporated into your photography straight away.

Now that you have taken plenty of stunning images, the course discusses various photography apps that can be used straight from your mobile device to improve your images or give them a different feel. Additionally, some of these photo apps also provide additional options for capturing your images, giving you more control than your phone’s native camera application. We discuss the various social media sites and apps available to share your work through, along with how to get the most out of them.

2. Digital Photography: An In-Depth Guide To Digital Photography

This comprehensive and exciting course will teach you everything that you need to know about Digital photography and how to take the perfect picture!

In the days before the digital revolution photography was still a popular pastime, but many people where put off by the necessity of buying film and then either processing and developing the film yourself or taking it to a Photolab, then receiving a set of 30 prints that had stickers on them explaining that the picture was out of focus or had red streaks on it because the film had been exposed to light or left in a drawer for 3 years before being developed.

Many photographers still use film (some even refusing to go digital) but the explosion of digital camera technology over the last 10 years has seen an increase in the popularity of photography. Social Media sites have also contributed to this rise, after all why write something when you can just take a picture on your smart phone.

The area of photography that seems to have the biggest boost is the use of SLR cameras, now known as Digital SLR (or DSLR) cameras. In the past many amateurs and snappers preferred point and shoot cameras because of their simplicity and ease of use. The SLR camera was for professionals and enthusiastic hobbyists. Now it’s almost impossible to walk down the street in any city in the world without seeing at least one person carrying a DSLR camera.

3. Graphic Design: Beginner's Guide To Graphic Design

Requiring no prerequisite knowledge, the Graphic Design Course provides you with all the information you need to get started in this creative industry. You’ll gain an understanding of the history, theories, practices and principles of the topic, and even be guided through taking on paid work as a freelancer or through your own business. To understand where graphic design is now, you first need to take a step back to appreciate where it has been. You will be guided through the history of graphic and industrial design, learning about key personalities and moments, and how they helped to form the modern approach to design. Good graphic design is governed by certain theories and laws, such as colour theory, the role and use of grids, typography and much more. The Graphic Design Course takes you through these fundamentals and the basic elements that make up the practice.

Putting the theory to practical use, the course explains the tools, skills and knowledge that good graphic designers must develop. A big part of the early stages of the creative process involves making quick sketches and then more finished drawings. You will learn the importance of developing good drawing skills, the difference between sketching and drawing (understanding when each is appropriate) and how to make drawing easier by separating elements into simplified forms that you can build upon. An understanding of letterforms is one of the most important skills for a graphic designer to possess. This course outlines the difference between typography, lettering, and calligraphy and provides step-by-step guidance on drawing calligraphy and adjusting letterforms with typography.

Having learnt about the basics of individual design elements – colour, shape, texture, space, and form, the Graphic Design Course expands on each area, explaining their individual importance. From this understanding, you are guided through joining these together. Illustrated explanations offer a coherent understanding of composition, Gestalt Theory, and other design principles. You will also learn about why graphic design is used and the differences between print and web design. Graphic design is an old practice that has changed massively with the advent of affordable computing. This course explains how computers function and how traditional practices and processes have changed with the digital age. It also provides you with a list of industry-standard software and online resources that are essential to the modern graphic designer.

Every project a designer takes on is a problem or a challenge to help others understand something, so to be an effective designer requires good problem solving. The Graphic Design Course examines processes that will aid you in becoming a more proficient problem solver and teaches you how to create a design concept that will guide the creation of your solution. You’ll learn about what various tools included with image editors do and how they can aid you in creating your designs. This course offers guidance in setting up a business or becoming a freelancer and how these options compare to being a salaried employee. You will explore the services you can provide, the paperwork you need to be aware of when setting up, how to create a business identity, setting up your workspace, finding your niche, and how to create and action an effective marketing plan.

A portfolio can secure or lose you clients, so you need to make sure it’s a good one. A good portfolio should showcase your talents and demonstrate that you are capable of providing the solutions that your clients are looking for. You’ll learn how to create a portfolio that sells your services and matches up with your clients’ needs. With so many different markets and industries that use graphic design for vastly varied purposes, there is no standardised pricing for this type of work. This can make it difficult to decide what to charge. The Graphic Design Course advises you on how to calculate your pricing based on various factors and the services you offer, and how to go about negotiating the price of a project with a client.
