Course I: Discover Digital Photography

There are 12 units of study

What is Digital Photography?
In our first lesson, you'll learn what digital photography is and how photography evolved to this exciting new level. We'll go over some of the jargon and terms used in the industry, explore some of the equipment digital photographers use, and highlight the areas where things have changed.

Let's Talk About Cameras
In today's lesson, you'll have an opportunity to really get to know your camera or the camera of your dreams. Students find this lesson to be one of the most helpful as they learn about the different features available on digital cameras, find out what to look for both inside and outside the camera itself, and explore the different levels of equipment available.

Shopping for Digital Equipment
When it's time to make a decision and buy the camera that's right for you, you'll want to know how to make your best choice. In this lesson, we'll discuss more of the attributes and features of digital photography as you prepare to meet the camera salesman armed with solid knowledge of what's important to you.

Storing Digital Images
Digital storage is a big issue, so in this lesson we'll look at ways to address this aspect of digital photography. When it comes to digital images, you'll need storage space not only on your camera, but also on your computer. Today, I'll give you lots of recommendations and guidelines for getting the most out of your storage space, as well as how to set up back up procedures.

The Digital Darkroom
The ability to edit your digital images is one of the most compelling features of digital photography. In today's lesson, we'll take a look at several of the software programs available to you and some of the many features you'll find in digital editing programs.

Digital Photography Online
Using digital imagery online is another big part of digital photography. In this lesson, you'll discover ways you can easily use digital images with e-mail and on Web sites. We'll also discuss sizing images and using cell phone cameras, Web cams, and other online resources.

Printing Options
Printing digital images is a different process from simply dropping off a roll of film. In this lesson, we'll explore the many options for printing at home and the extensive network of retail printers available for digital work. You'll also learn about the different types of printers available, and how you can obtain archival prints.

The Mix of Film and Digital
Film photography hasn't gone away completely, but digital photography is making a strong stand at replacing it. In this lesson, we'll focus on ways camera manufacturers have blended the best features of each format to give photographers great new ways to do traditional techniques. This area is changing rapidly, and students often find it quite interesting to see how quickly digital photography has caught up with film standards.

Scanning and Restoring Photos
Scanning printed images is an important option for digital photography. In today's lesson, we'll look at restoring old and damaged photos, using scanners to bring slides, negatives, and prints into a digital format, and even how to capture an image of a 3-D object with a scanner.

Traveling With Digital Equipment
Travel photography is always a favorite subject for photographers. Digital photography presents some different challenges and opportunities, so in this lesson, we'll look at how professionals in the field handle the challenges, as well as techniques and opportunities you can use when you travel.

Digital Photography at Work
Digital photography has emerged in many different work places. In this lesson, we'll take a look at how not only photographers use digital photography for their businesses, but also how other types of businesses have incorporated it as well.

Composing Digitally
In our final lesson together, we'll look at how to compose your pictures with digital options in mind. There's a lot more to being a digital photographer than just owning a digital camera, and today you'll see some great examples of difficult situations that you can remedy with digital solutions.

Course II: Mastering Your Digital SLR Camera

There are 12 units of study

Getting to Know Your Digital SLR Camera

In this lesson, you'll explore the basics of your DSLR camera. We'll take a tour of the DSLR, examining the different parts, buttons, and controls, and we'll also explore the exposure mode options you can select for different shooting situations. We'll discuss some general maintenance and housekeeping issues with memory cards, batteries, and cleaning—and by the end of this lesson, you'll feel empowered to get started with your DSLR camera!

Zooming In on Lenses

Today we'll explore DLSR lenses. One of the most important features of the DSLR is the ability to change lenses based on shooting conditions. You'll find out how lenses work, and we'll discuss some of the most common DSLR lenses and in what shooting conditions those lenses can help you get the best photos.  We'll also talk about common lens filters and how they can help protect your lens and improve your photos.

Seeing Clearly: Exposure, Focus, and Metering

Do you know how your camera sees a photo? In this lesson, you'll learn about the three components of exposure—aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. You'll also learn about metering modes and how your camera uses these to determine the correct exposure for a photo. We'll discuss autofocusing and how your DSLR determines focus, and you'll find out how to manage autofocus and solve some common focusing frustrations!

Going Deep: Using Aperture

We've talked briefly about aperture in earlier lessons, but in this lesson, we'll go deep into aperture. You'll learn how this aspect of exposure controls how much light enters the camera, and you'll discover how to control this light to affect the quality of your photos as well as certain focusing effects. We'll discuss how aperture is measured and how to use the Aperture mode on your camera, and before you're finished with this lesson, you'll have a chance to take some photos and practice using aperture!

Speeding Up and Slowing Down With Shutter Speed

Today we're going to talk about shutter speed—a second aspect of exposure. Shutter speed controls the amount of time that light enters the camera when you take a photo. You probably equate shutter speed with fast-action shots, such as sports photos. A fast shutter speed can stop action, but a slow shutter speed also offers a world of shooting opportunities. We'll explore both fast and slow shutter speeds in this lesson, as well as the Shutter Priority mode.

Getting Bright With ISO

In this lesson, we'll explore how ISO settings affect camera exposure. ISO manages the camera's sensitivity to light—the higher the ISO setting, the more sensitive. While ISO appears to be an easy fix for potentially dark photos, it can be a tricky setting to use. Today, you'll learn all about ISO solutions, as well as potential ISO problems, and you'll see how to manage ISO on your DSLR.

Making the Most of Flash Photography

I promised we'd talk about flash photography, and here we are! In this lesson, you'll explore your DSLR's flash options. You'll learn about using and controlling the on-board flash, and you'll also learn how to use an external flash with your DSLR's hot shoe. You've likely heard that professional photographers use natural lighting, but professionals also know how to use a flash when they need it. We'll discuss how to get the best photos using your flash, and you'll learn the professionals' tricks as well!

Managing Photo Files, Editing, and Movies

This lesson is all about editing photos and shooting movies on your DSLR. Your camera organizes photo information and stores the photos you take on memory cards. This way, you end up with a digital photo you can use on a computer or print. But how does this work, and what options do you have? What about resolution? What if you take a shot you love but just need a quick editing change to it? Your DSLR can help you with all of these issues, so today we'll spend some time in the DSLR's menu options!

Working With Manual Mode

Manual mode is an exposure mode on your DSLR that lets you make all of the decisions. You get to choose the aperture, shutter speed, and ISO . . . basically, anything you can configure or change, you can do it in manual mode. The good news is that manual mode gives you complete control over your camera. The downside is that there's a bit of learning curve that comes with control. In this lesson, you'll learn how to master manual mode and use it in a variety of shooting situations. To be a great DSLR photographer, manual mode is a must!

Getting Better Exposure

Your DSLR is a sophisticated tool that can help you take great photos. But the DSLR can only capture what you choose for it to capture. As such, a poor photo through the viewfinder will be a poor photo it its final form. For all of the bells and whistles, your DSLR needs a human—a photographer—to capture great photos. In this lesson, you'll explore how to get better exposure through composition, managing available light, and working with a few additional DSLR features: the histogram and exposure bracketing.

Shooting HDR Photos

In the previous lesson, you learned about a helpful feature called exposure bracketing. With exposure bracketing, you can take several identical photos using different exposures. This way, you can choose which photo looks best. Exposure bracketing also offers another option—shooting high dynamic range (HDR) photos. With an HDR photo, you combine all three exposures from the bracketed shots, creating a photo with a higher range of color and exposure than you could capture otherwise. We'll explore this in today's lesson, and you'll have lots of opportunities to practice as well!

Mastering Difficult Shooting Situations

Even though your DSLR is a wonderful camera, there are a few specific shooting situations that are always difficult to master. In this final lesson, we'll explore the three kinds of photos that give DSLR photographers the most trouble: fast-action shots, macro shots, and low-light photography. The good news is your DSLR can help you master these shooting situations if you know how to use the camera's tools and features, and in this lesson, you'll see how to put these features to work!

Course III: Photographing People with Your Digital Camera

There are 12 units of study

Digital Camera Basics

Photographing people is one of the most exciting and complicated kinds of photography. Yet, with just a few skills, you'll soon be taking better pictures of people. In this lesson, we'll begin by exploring digital photography equipment and talk about how to set up an inexpensive home studio.

All About Exposure

Today you'll learn about exposure and the pivotal role it plays in photography. We'll talk about the three camera controls that affect exposure, and you'll find out how to use these controls to achieve the desired effect in your photographs.

Indoor and Outdoor Lighting Techniques.

In this lesson, you'll learn about light.  Every photo is made from the effects of light on your digital camera's sensor, so the importance of understanding and using light has an enormous impact on your photos.  You'll find out how to make the most of indoor and outdoor light and how to use some tactics to give you better shots.  Then, we'll explore some difficult lighting situations and how to overcome those problems in order to take great people photos.

Composing Photographs

In this lesson, you’ll learn how to compose a photo.  Photo composition involves not only the primary subject and secondary objects, but also the general look and overall feeling of a photo.  You’ll find out how to tackle common composition problems, use the rule of thirds, put tactics to work in order to shoot sharp photos, and use depth of field to your advantage.

Taking Portraits of Individuals and Groups

People photographers spend most of their time taking portraits of individuals and groups, but posing and arranging these shots can be difficult.  In this lesson, you’ll learn how to solve common problems with portraits and how to arrange and shoot portrait and group photos that give you a true representation of the individual or group.

Photographing Hands, Faces, and People with Their Pets

In this lesson, you’ll learn how to take photos of faces, hands, and people with their pets.  You’ll discover how to manage composition, posing, and angles, and how to capture meaningful photos that communicate to the viewer.  You’ll also learn how to handle lighting with pets and how to keep their attention as you photograph them.

Photographing Children

In this lesson, you’ll learn how to take photos of babies and children.  You’ll discover some practical tips that will help you shoot those intimate, personal photos.  We’ll explore techniques for taking photos of children in motion, discuss how to pose kids, and consider specific issues related to photographing babies and newborns.

Action Photography

Have you ever tried to get some good sports photos, only to be disappointed with the results?  Maybe the image was blurry or the gym lighting made your photos have a yellow tint.  Sports photography is often rather difficult, but this lesson will help you learn tools and tricks so you can capture great sports images.  You'll learn all about managing shutter speed, composition, lighting, and you'll find out what makes a sports photo look great.

Macro and Abstract Photography

In lesson, you'll learn about macro and abstract photography.  Macro photography uses specialized lenses and lens attachments that allow you to get very close to items, while abstract photography focuses on photos that may not have a discernable subject.  You'll be surprised to know that you can use both of these techniques to create beautiful photos of people, and in this lesson, you'll find out how.

Shooting Formals and Weddings

One of the more challenging types of people photography is shooting formal events, such as proms and weddings.  In this lesson, we'll tackle this difficult subject and explore how to manage posing, lighting, and composition.  We'll also explore how to manage distractions, problems, and even how to take great photos of inanimate objects, such as the wedding cake!

Post-Processing Photos of People

In this lesson, you'll find out how to make the most of image editing software and your people photos.  Even good photos sometimes need a bit of editing work to make them great, and in this lesson, we'll focus on editing techniques specific to photos of people.  You'll see how to adjust composition, exposure, and how to fix common problems, such as facial blemishes.

The Business of Photography

After you master your people photography skills, you may want to begin a business.  In this final lesson, we'll explore the business of photography.  You'll find out how to manage clients, the services you'll offer, and you'll learn about photography contracts – a vital part of your business.  You'll even be able to download a contract and customize it to meet your business needs.
