Get a Closer Look at the Interesting World of Ancient Egypt with our Egyptology Online Course

Known as one of the greatest and oldest-known civilizations, Ancient Egypt was both an incredibly interesting and important part of human history. The Egyptology Course gives you the opportunity to uncover this history, as you are guided through its various periods, religions, beliefs, rulers, and knowledge.

The Egyptology Course begins by sending you far back, to take a broad look at the history of Ancient Egypt, with an overview of how the society progressed over time. You’ll journey through the following periods: Early Dynastic Period, Old Kingdom, First Intermediate Period, Middle Kingdom, Second Intermediate Period, New Kingdom, Third Intermediate Period, Late Period and the Ptolemaic Period.

Religion was at the heart of Ancient Egypt throughout all the periods of its society. The course looks at deities, cosmology, various types of religion and how they were practiced, and the role of magic in society. Also extremely important to the Ancient Egyptians was their concepts of death and the afterlife. You’ll explore these beliefs, mummification – what it was, and why and how it was done – and the significance of tombs in transitioning from life into death.

One of the great draws of Egyptology is the study of kings, queens and pharaohs. The Egyptology Course guides you through the terminology used for their rulers and how they were perceived as being divine. You’ll also take a look at some of the most important and notable figures in Egyptian history.

It is recognized that, for their time, Ancient Egyptians were a highly advanced society with progressive knowledge of medicine, astronomy, electricity, agriculture and architecture. This course guides you through the Ancient Egyptian’s understanding of each of these areas and even covers the more controversial theories that they had advanced ‘spiritual technology’ and that they were assisted by ‘ancient aliens’.

An issue that can be contentious, the Egyptology Course discusses how historians have viewed race in Ancient Egypt, how Ancient Egyptians viewed it themselves, how we look at it today, and the views of prominent historian, Cheikh Anta Diop.

Part 1: Naming and Terminology

Learning Objectives:

  • Different terminology used to refer to them
  • The divinity of rulers
  • Important figures

Naming and Terminology

Our Choice of Terminology

Throughout this module, one will see that the word "ruler" is used often, while other sources may use the terms "pharaoh" or "king." Someone may have asked why this is the case. It was decided to use the name ruler because the word "pharaoh" was never used in Ancient Egypt. Its current meaning is founded solely on its use in the Bible.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Names and Titles
  • Examples of Full Titles

Part 2: The Divinity of Rulers

Divine Rulership

The Ancient Egyptians regarded their kings as sacred, referring to them as "sons or daughters of Ra." They were regarded as the intermediary between the earthly and celestial worlds, between humans and gods, throughout their lifespan.

Having said that, they were indeed mortal and they were in a human body.

They were, however, immortal because of their divinity, which guaranteed them eternal existence.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Ancient Egyptian Views About Divine Leadership

Part 3: Important Figures

Though they do not have time to research all of the various Ancient Egyptian kings, we will look at six of the most important.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Khufu
  • Amenhotep I
  • Hatshepsut
  • Thutmose III
  • Tutankhamun
  • Cleopatra VII

Module 7: Ancient Egyptian Knowledge I

Learning Objectives:

  • What they knew about medicine
  • Their knowledge in the field of astronomy

  • Doctors
  • Imhotep

Part 2: Astronomy

The Ancient Egyptians were intrigued by the discovery of the stars, and their understanding of astronomy evolved and changed throughout their history. This section would examine astronomy from the Prehistoric to the Old Kingdom, the First Intermediate Period to the New Kingdom, and Greek Egypt.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Prehistoric to the Old Kingdom

  • Ancient Batteries
  • The Great Pyramid as a Power Plant
  • Irrigation and Agriculture
  • The Nile
  • Irrigation

Module 8: Ancient Egyptian Knowledge II

Part 1: Architecture

Learning Objectives:

  • The importance of Ancient Egyptian architecture
  • What spiritual technology is and how the Ancient Egyptians may have used it
  • Theories about alien assistance

Architecture

In contrast to other ancient civilizations, Egyptian architecture is highly important. This is due to the fact that the Ancient Egyptians built some of the most long-lasting settlements in history. The Pyramid of Khufu, for example, is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World that still stands (also known as the Great Pyramid or the Great Pyramid of Giza).

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Pyramids
  • Pyramid Design
  • Temple Hieroglyphs
  • Temple Planning

Part 2: Spiritual Technology

What is Spiritual Technology?

In general, Collins Dictionary defines technology as “methods, processes, and instruments that are the product of scientific expertise being used for practical purposes.” Spirituality is characterized as “the quality of being concerned with the human spirit or soul rather than material or physical things.”

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Quantum Theory
  • Great Pyramid as Energy Transmitters

Part 3: Alien Assistance

Some scholars also believe that the development of Ancient Egyptian civilization was due to aliens – that the aliens were helping the Ancient Egyptians. This segment would look at some of the theories associated with this philosophy.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Ancient Astronauts
  • Erich Von Daniken
  • Skull Elongation

Module 9: Racial Issues

Part 1: A Historical Question

Learning Objectives:

  • The history of the racial debate, both in terms of Victorian times and slavery
  • How Ancient Egyptians themselves viewed race
  • A modern view of the racial debate
  • The views of prominent historian Cheikh Anta Diop

A Historical Question

Victorian Times

Scholars were looking at race at the time of Victorian Egyptology. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Western scholars developed racial theories about race – they established a hierarchy of white people at the top and black people at the bottom and used ‘sciences' such as craniometry to support their ideas.

Western Slavery

Slavery was abolished in the United States during the nineteenth century. Although some wished to see black people as free, some contended that they should still be slaves. The latter defended their position by saying that black people were inferior to white people and had no civilizations, i.e. they were "savages."

Part 2: Ancient Egyptian Viewpoints

How Did Ancient Egyptians See Race?

The Ancient Egyptians did ‘see' race to the point that when they painted, they represented various skin and hair colors, facial expressions, and wardrobe distinctions, among other things. It should be remembered, however, that the skin color variations found in photographs of Ancient Egypt may not be accurate; the color was frequently applied in modern times, leaving room for ethnic prejudice or stereotypes.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Ancient Egyptian Art
  • A Modern View
  • Cheikh Anta Diop
  • Beyond Race

Module 10: Egyptology Then and Now

Part 1: Victorian Egyptology

Learning Objectives:

  • Victorian Egyptology
  • Artefacts and their return
  • The re-examining of Ancient Egypt from a modern point of view

Victorian Egyptology

Overview of Victorian Egyptology

With Napoleon Bonaparte's conquest of Egypt in 1798, what is now known as "classic Egyptology" began. Between 1809 and 1829, the publication Description de l'Egypte, written by the new Egyptologists who had founded themselves in Egypt as a result of Bonaparte's conquest, spread knowledge of Ancient Egypt throughout Europe.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Spiritualism
  • Artefacts
  • Ownership of Artefacts
  • Egypt Claiming Back Its Artefacts

Part 2: Re-Examining Ancient Egypt

This segment will investigate the theories of Dr. John Romer, who claims that much of our knowledge of Ancient Egypt is faulty and is focused on our own culture and assumptions.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Why History Needs a Re-Examination
  • Our Cultural Assumptions
  • Not a ‘State’

Part 1: Architecture

Learning Objectives:

  • The importance of Ancient Egyptian architecture
  • What spiritual technology is and how the Ancient Egyptians may have used it
  • Theories about alien assistance

Architecture

In contrast to other ancient civilizations, Egyptian architecture is highly important. This is due to the fact that the Ancient Egyptians built some of the most long-lasting settlements in history. The Pyramid of Khufu, for example, is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World that still stands (also known as the Great Pyramid or the Great Pyramid of Giza).

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Pyramids
  • Pyramid Design
  • Temple Hieroglyphs
  • Temple Planning

Part 2: Spiritual Technology

What is Spiritual Technology?

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Quantum Theory
  • Great Pyramid as Energy Transmitters

  • Ancient Astronauts
  • Erich Von Daniken
  • Skull Elongation

Module 9: Racial Issues

Part 1: A Historical Question

Learning Objectives:

  • The history of the racial debate, both in terms of Victorian times and slavery
  • How Ancient Egyptians themselves viewed race
  • A modern view of the racial debate
  • The views of prominent historian Cheikh Anta Diop

A Historical Question

Victorian Times

Scholars were looking at race at the time of Victorian Egyptology. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Western scholars developed racial theories about race – they established a hierarchy of white people at the top and black people at the bottom and used ‘sciences' such as craniometry to support their ideas.

Western Slavery

Slavery was abolished in the United States during the nineteenth century. Although some wished to see black people as free, some contended that they should still be slaves. The latter defended their position by saying that black people were inferior to white people and had no civilizations, i.e. they were "savages."

Part 2: Ancient Egyptian Viewpoints

How Did Ancient Egyptians See Race?

The Ancient Egyptians did ‘see' race to the point that when they painted, they represented various skin and hair colors, facial expressions, and wardrobe distinctions, among other things. It should be remembered, however, that the skin color variations found in photographs of Ancient Egypt may not be accurate; the color was frequently applied in modern times, leaving room for ethnic prejudice or stereotypes.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Ancient Egyptian Art
  • A Modern View
  • Cheikh Anta Diop
  • Beyond Race

Module 10: Egyptology Then and Now

Part 1: Victorian Egyptology

Learning Objectives:

  • Victorian Egyptology
  • Artefacts and their return
  • The re-examining of Ancient Egypt from a modern point of view

Victorian Egyptology

Overview of Victorian Egyptology

With Napoleon Bonaparte's conquest of Egypt in 1798, what is now known as "classic Egyptology" began. Between 1809 and 1829, the publication Description de l'Egypte, written by the new Egyptologists who had founded themselves in Egypt as a result of Bonaparte's conquest, spread knowledge of Ancient Egypt throughout Europe.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Spiritualism
  • Artefacts
  • Ownership of Artefacts
  • Egypt Claiming Back Its Artefacts

Part 2: Re-Examining Ancient Egypt

This segment will investigate the theories of Dr. John Romer, who claims that much of our knowledge of Ancient Egypt is faulty and is focused on our own culture and assumptions.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Why History Needs a Re-Examination
  • Our Cultural Assumptions
  • Not a ‘State’
