Infection Control Online Course Outline

Module 1: Cleaning and Disinfection

One of the best practices you can do to minimize the growth of bacteria is by remembering the acronym, CLAYGO (Clean as you go). The whole idea behind it is about cleaning and/or disinfecting any object or surface area that you know is dirty. Bacteria stacks up and multiplies over time, and clearly no one wants that. By following CLAYGO, you prevent the growth of bacteria and the likelihood of it contaminating other objects. This module will talk about the difference between cleaning and disinfection and teach you ways you can keep your space clean by eradicating all traces of bacteria.

      Cleaning:

Cleaning is generally the removal of any visible form of dirt and impurities on surface areas and objects through the use of water and detergents.

      Disinfection:

Disinfection talks about the killing of germs using chemicals. There’s a variety of microscopic bacteria, viruses, and pathogens that are invisible to the naked eye and that you never knew were there. Luckily, they can be killed with powerful disinfectants and chemicals.

      Application:

It is ideal to use both methods to completely get rid of any trace of bacteria.

      The 3 types of Cleaning/Disinfecting:

      Routine

      Enhanced

      Terminal

      Selecting the right detergent:

There are specific types of detergents that are meant for the right job. Knowing the right kind of detergent is crucial, whether you’re dealing with gram-negative or gram-positive bacteria. There’s also rapid-acting detergent meant for surfaces made with certain material.

      Cleaning Technique:

This talks about the motion needed to effectively remove dirt from any area/object.

Module 2: Waste Management

Waste management talks about the mandatory control, handling, and disposal of infectious waste material. This module will cover the different kinds of waste and proper methods of waste management with maximum efficacy.

      Infectious Waste:

Any form of material, solid, or liquid waste that are hazardous and can potentially transmit diseases through infection.

      The common waste classes:

Pathological/Biological Waste: Human Blood, Tissue, Bodily Fluids, etc.

Sharps Items: Any sharp object that has been contaminated with Pathological Waste. These include, needles, syringes, scalpels, and other medical equipment. The procedure needed to minimize infection would be to fully sterilize or dispose of said items.

Plasters/Bandages: Like Sharps Items, these have also been contaminated with Pathological Waste and should immediately be disposed of after use.

Soiled Items: Once again, these items will have been tainted by human waste and should be properly cleaned or disposed of.

Sanitary Waste: Sanitary Waste talks about used tissue paper, wet wipes, female sanitary items, and so on. Naturally, these receive the same treatment and should be disposed of immediately, away from human contact.

Infectious Substances to be aware of:

      Blood

Bodily Fluids: Saliva, Mucus, and Pus

Waste Products: Feces, Urine, and Vomit

      Skin and Tissue

      Waste Management Principles:

Minimize contact (Avoidance of any infectious waste)

Suitable containers (Choosing the appropriate container for the type of waste)

      Procedures (Proper segregation of waste)

Module 3: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

It goes without saying that your personal health takes top priority. In the workplace, there exist hazardous materials and substances that you should be aware of. Fortunately, the use of Personal Protective Equipment eliminates such a problem. In this module, we will discuss the different kinds of protective equipment you can use to keep yourself from infection.

A legal requirement and a necessary measure:

Any workplace with potentially hazardous material/products have mandatory safety protocols. It is good practice to know that workers are legally required to wear protective equipment to eliminate any form of contamination or infection.

      Eyes:

The eyes are susceptible to infection through transmission. If you work with in a lab with chemicals or generally just people in the workplace, the chances are, viral and bacterial agents will find its way into your eyes through droplets or splashing. This can easily be fixed by wearing protective eye gear.

      Skin:

Many infections can be transmitted through skin contact, specifically through cuts, burns, or wounds. Even something as minor as a rash can be enough for bacteria to penetrate. This can be remedied by simply applying a medical bandage over your affected area to protect you from infection. Another thing you can do for good measure is wearing the appropriate clothing. For example, say you have a big cut on your forearm- a long-sleeved shirt or a lab coat to give you an extra layer of protection can go a long way.

      Respiratory:

First, let’s touch on the pathological forms of infection. As you already know, there are many kinds of airborne bacteria and viruses in our atmosphere. Scarily enough, you can get sick just by inhaling them without knowing. A good measure would be to wear a medical-grade mask that filters out 99% of the virus.

The other respiratory hazard is inhaling chemical fumes. This can be avoided by wearing appropriate gas masks.

      Equipment:

      Gloves

      Eyewear (Goggles and Eye shields)

      Gowns and Scrubs

      Masks

Module 4: Hand and Respiratory Hygiene

Hand and Respiratory Hygiene are the two most important habits you should acquire to minimise the spread of infection. These two are the most important because they are also the most common ways of transmission. In this final module, we will cover the best practices you should implement to, once again, minimize the risk of infection.

      Medical Hand Hygiene:

A more elaborate and rigorous form of handwashing that not only eliminates visible dirt on the hands, but also disinfecting them by killing microscopic bacteria and viruses using medical-grade soap.

The 3 golden rules of Medical Hand Hygiene:

      Make it a Habit

      Proper Sanitizing

      Technique

      Respiratory Hygiene:

The practice of killing airborne viruses and pathogens with the use of aerosol disinfectants. By doing this, you minimize the risk of infection and help those without masks on.

      Respiratory Hygiene Best Practices:

      Cough and sneeze etiquette

      Stay healthy

      Disposal of tissues
